Hi all,

I am considering to get one of those new analogue synths. I tried Prophet 8 and Poly Evolver from Dave Smith today and I liked both I couldn't decide which to go for. They do blend digital stuff to their products but I thought it was very pleasing regardless and very inspiring to play around with.

Poly Evolver unfortunately only has four voices. I know of Alesis Andromeda A6 but are there any other cool alternatives out there?

Cheers!
Rob

Not really if you want new stuff. You have the Jomox Sunsyn but i think that's out of production. Then there's the SE Omega/C.O.D.E http://www.studioelectronics.com/products_omega8.php
That's about it when it comes to new analog polys.

The P8 doesnt blend any digital stuff in its signal path, at all. Its digitally controlled; that's as far as it goes, and if it wasnt, you wouldnt have patch memories et al.

If money is not an issue I'd go for the Sunsyn. Best sounding, most inspiring new synth there is IMHO.

I had the opportunity to check out the Prophet 8 last weekend at the Analogue Heaven Bay Area gathering. I already own a Poly Evolver Keyboard, so I grilled Dave Smith about the differences and similarities between the two. Basically, if you turn down the digital oscillators and all the feedback stuff on the PEK, you'll have something similar to the P8. He said he was personally surprised at how different the two synths sounded, given the similar architecture. From my perspective, the difference is that the PEK gives you two digital wavesequenced oscillators, while the P8 gives you 8 voices. That is the tradeoff in a nutshell.

I also have an Andromeda. Quite frankly, I would choose the A6 over any other analog polysynth available. It sounds fantastic, and is extremely versatile in terms of modulation. You have to look around to find a used one at a good price, but there are deals out there to be had...

@ deastman: does the P8 do sync and cross-mod? i thought i read it doesn't, but i haven't looked into it...

And certaimly that's not the only new analogue you can buy...

MacBeth seem to have some nice gear on offer.

And someone already mentioned the Buchla one...

And on http://www.analoguesolutions.com/ you can find some of these...

and...

and...

and although this is only a filter, you can use a filter with any old basic sound and make it into a synthesizer to all intents and purposes...

And no doubt I'll find a few more for you. The analogue market has not been as bouyant and full of choice for many a year. Alesis and Dave Smith are far from the only choices.

Oh look...

...you can even buy a brand spanking new Doepfer-in-a-suitcase nowadays too!
Must admit I didn't know about that one until just now. :?

And you can still buy one of these from new...

Again...not a synth as such, but put it to good use and you can make it one.
