Heyall, I've got some problems with Cubase SX3. First of all I'm very new to this music-making stuff (bought Cubase last week) so please spare with me - plus I'm Swedish, so my english might not be pitchperfect. :P

Anyway, thing is, when I use my USB-keyboard M-Audio there's about 2 seconds latency for the sound to come out from my computer to my speakers - worth noting is that I use a laptop, and the sound-hardware usually isn't too fancy on those things I understand.

Well, anyway, I select "M-Audio USB" (or something like that) for Midi-in and then the specific VST-instrument I wanna use for Midi-out - if this is correct or not, I don't know. But the sound does get through, only it takes 2 seconds. The funny thing is, that on Midi-out, I can also select my M-Audio keyboard; I tried it, and when I did that some standard piano-ish sound appeared and there was suddenly no latency.

Soo, please do help me! I've no idea what the heckis going on and nothing makes any sense, so basically any tip will do that can get me on the right track here.

Thank you!

The latency settings are set up in Device Setup in Cubase SX3 (VST Audiobay page). Check the Cubase PDF manual page 293.

If you aren't using good ASIO drivers with a good external soundcard and are using the built-in soundcard on your laptop then you may not be able to achieve good, real-time MIDI inputting. I use a 1.5ms-3ms buffer size for "live" playing.
