I've just bought a Tapco Mix50, so that I can record guitar and vocals at the same time. My soundcard is an Audiophile 24/96.

When I plugged my trusty Shure Unidyne III (PE54D) mic in, and monitor through my sequencer, I get a very low signal level on the mic. Electric guitar plugged into the mixer via VAMP2 is fine.

If I try to raise the level of the mic I get a significant amount of hiss, which turns into huge amounts of hiss if I use the Gain control on the mixer's mic channel. :?

I realise that this is a budget setup, but am surprised at how low the mic signal is, and the amount of hiss when I raise levels on the mixer.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Thanks! :)

Are you using the XLR input on the desk? If not, give it a try. Should be less noisy than a 1/4 inch jack input. Tapco mixers do have a reputation for being noisy ... a desk with better pre-amps will improve things.

Yes...I've tried both mic inputs. The impression I'm getting is that the mics output is very low. Would that be the case with such an old mic?
