Kore... wow, what a disappointment

Ok I have to vent. I've spent the last week working with my new Kore 1 controller and I'm amazed that NI would have such a poorly executed product. Yeah, I'd heard about all the headaches users have had, but I still wasn't prepared for just how buggy it is.

The ASIO driver works on my system as a whole (system sounds work, mp3s play, etc) but in Ableton Live I can get no audio except for the test tone.

The standalone version only sees the factory patches while the plugin version only sees my user patches. Both are set to look in the same directories.

The UI is composed of three different panes for which the displays can be turned on and off. Turning the 'Channels' pane off and then on again causes the 'patch browser' pane to be displayed with all of the patch listings cropped out of the view. The only way to access the patches at that point is to leave the channels pane turned off. Awesome.

About half the time the software has to rebuild its patch database during a restart of the program. There is no rhyme or reason as to what causes it. Sometimes it rebuilds, sometimes it doesn't.

When removing the protective plastic covering from the buttons the plastic-glass on the top of the Escape button pulled right off the unit.

The first time I powered the unit up the LCD display displayed a bunch of garbage. Fortunately this cured itself after a system reboot and I have my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again.

For a patch library / hardware product that usually retails for $550 this is unacceptable.

Hopefully they bring it up to muster with the Kore 2 update. The concept is great but if they don't give it an overhaul I'm returning it.

OK... let's take this one step at a time;

Live will always default to the main outs and not the headphone outs, no matter what your preferences in Live are set to. If that's your situation (nothing through the headphones), set the master to outs 3&4. Also, you'll have to turn on outs 3&4 in your preferences in Live; they're off by default.

I've been using Kore as my soundcard with both Live 4 and Live 6 since the early Kore betas...

It sounds like the plugin version and standalone version are just looking in different spots in the browser tree. Go to the tree view; can you see them all by navigating through that?

I've never heard of that one happening (and I'm the Kore forum moderator). Are you running 1.1?

Then, either your plugins that use databases haven't had their databases rebuilt, or Kore's database has never rebuilt completely, or both. Otherwise, the database won't rebuild on its own with the latest version (1.1).

Run any NI app you use in standalone and rebuild their databases/check library paths. Then, start Kore in standalone, rescan your plugins and manually rebuild your database from the options menu. Also, be sure you're running the most recent version of any NI plugin and that you're running Kore 1.1.

That definitely shouldn't have happened. That one's on NI.

Turns out that while I'd installed version 1.1 the vst had been placed in the wrong folder so Ableton was still accessing 1.0. Fixing this took care of the problem with the misdisplayed panes and now the plugin also sees the factory patches. Not sure why that last point was an issue to begin with but its fixed now whatever the case. Standalone still doesn't see my user patches but its not really an issue since I don't really use it.

I'd already turned on outputs 3 and 4 in Ableton and still get no sound other than when I turn on the test tone. I only get the test tone when 3 and 4 are turned on so the driver is at least working on a restricted level. I'll check to see if there is an update for Ableton.

Yes I was accessing an outdated vst dll and that's my fault. Unfortunately that only takes care of a small portion of the issues.

By the way that posting should have read "...of his own incompetence." Need I point out the irony?

I really haven't had problems with kore, as long as I use all the updates it works, if you don't update everything I imagine it would suck.

I don't think they are changing any construction except removing the audio out.

Personaly I'd rather have kore one hardware than kore 2. I am upgrading to the kore 2 software though.

I dunno we all have complaints, I personally think komplete 5 is a bad deal, if you own komplete 4 upgrading to komplete 5 sucks. But I'll do it so I don't have to pay like 600 the next time. Komplete 4 was a special product and worth every penny I spent on it and it works for me with Kore very well.

Got 2 copies of massive only thing I get in the upgrade is kontakt basically.

Sorry I got off topic, but the point of doing that was to show we all have our gripes with stuff we buy.

I wouldn't return Kore in hopes Kore 2 will be consrtucted better though. I think they just removed the audio on it to sell the audio control.

so I wouldn't expect Kore 2 to be any better constructed.


however as long as you download the updates for kore and ALL the NI products you own it should work.

I personally think komplete 5 is a bad deal, if you own komplete 4 upgrading to komplete 5 sucks.

I bought Kore 1 and Komplete 4 as a bundle a couple weeks ago from B&H. They shipped me Kore but Komplete 4 is still on backorder. My hunch is that they may send Komplete 5 instead, but oddly enough I hope they don't since Vokator and Spektral Delay have been removed. I could upgrade to 5 for free anyways since it was purchased during the grace period NI began on Sept 1 and presumably get the best of both packages.

Nope. Just run the K5 installer over the top of your previous K4 install; it'll update the K4 instruments to the latest versions (if they aren't already) and ignore Vokator and Spektral Delay. Or, do a custom install and just install the new stuff (GR 3 and Kontakt 3).
