I cannot find the old thread here, so I will re-ask this ever burning question:
how does one create a soundfont? What programs are needed. I currently use directwave for smaple sets, but I would like to make some fonts to import into other synths.

A google turned up this; Vienna SoundFont Studio (At the bottom of the page)
I haven't tried it myself though

this question has been pissing me off for the last few weeks. the world is in dire need of an affordable cross platform soundfont authoring tool. if you are on a pc with a creative soundcard, then you can use vienna for free. if you don't have a creative soundcard you can buy a program like awave studio, which will build the banks. there is also extreme sample converter which will enable you to directly record vsti's or hardware and convert them into soundfonts (as well as may other formats, but it crashed on me several times when i attempted to record into it). i don't think you can map samples into new instruments with it. same goes with the cleverly named, viena...which seems to only enable a user to edit premade soundfonts. correct me if i'm wrong on any of this.
i've been through a jungle of dissatisfaction with all these programs (okay, not awave...which seems to be the best payware choice for pc). on the mac side you have polyphontics which is okay but not a universal binary (meaning flaky performance including random crashes and a long startup time). the stripped down version of polyphontics (GB) is a universal binary, but will only export single soundfont instruments with very limited envelope and modulation capabilities. it is cheap though at 25 bucks and the developer's have told me they are working on the full blown universal binary version complete with soundfont and dls import.
anyone who has the magic solution to soundfont woes, please post here. soundfonts are attractive because they are so widely importable...and blah blah blah.

I used to have a Creative card so I used Vienna. I gave up making soundfonts ages ago, but I remember reading in the manual of one of H.G. Fortune's synths:
"In order to make SF2-files from Your wavefiles You can use the freeware tool Viena by Kenneth Rundt -
http://www.saunalahti.fi/kru99/index.htm
Viena does not require a Creative Soundblaster Live or Audigy Card to assemble SF2-files and please note
there is only one 'n' in Viena (unlike Vienna from Creative Labs)"

I have to say I have not tried (actually seen it) so I cannot recommend it personally, but I would never hesitate considering a suggestion from Günter.

edit: Mambo beat me to it.
Never tried it, though.Viena is a free tool for creating and editing SoundFonts. It is very much modeled after the well-known Vienna from Creative Labs, but Viena does not require you to have a Creative audio card installed.
