Hi
as a user of energy XT and Tracktion, I am considering learning / acquiring a new host. Ableton live is on the short list, but I'm intrigued by Renoise too.

The only thing that bothers me (the price not being really an issue with this host) is that the learning curve seems stiff (can you say that? ) even for the purpose of trying out the demo, given that I've never really used a tracker before. I don't have as much time as I want for music and don't want to "waste" it messing around with sth for days only to find out that it doesn't work for me or doesn't bring anything new to the way I work.

Of course nothing beats personal experience but...

Given that I use eXT and Tracktion, that I am more of a midi oriented musician these days, that I have a MIDI keyboard that I know how to play (chords, etc.), what could I do with Renoise that I can't do or can't do as easily in eXT for instance?

Difficult question, I know, yet I'd be grateful for ideas and opinions.

The music I make ranges from hip hop to electronic pop and beyond, with some weirdness in between (glitch, etc.) I don't do trance nor similar genres (sorry for my ignorance in this field).

Thanks
d

..why do you want to change hosts if your current ones are working for you?

Try out new things, find new sources of inspiration. Kind of like buying a new guitar. Before I tried eXT, I only used Tracktion. Now I use both, to do different things. More potential.

You might have fun with Aodix. It's a bit less of a jump than you'd take going to Renoise, but it still has some tracker in it. And it's currently free: http://www.aodix.com.
TIME IS WHAT KEEPS EVERYTHING FROM HAPPENING ALL AT ONCE.

i purchased renoise a few months back for the exact same reason. i'm a long time FL user and was looking for a new workflow for inspiration. i found it in renoise. i haven't worked with a 'faster' host since all of the commands are right there on the qwerty....it's saved me from my 'mouse' elbow....

my only complaint is the arranger in renoise...it has a ways to go, but they are working on it...in the meantime (or an even better solution for me) I compose in Renoise, load FL vsti in renoise, and do the arranging there.....with renoise's 'render selection to sample' option this is a breeze...FL and Renoise are a freakin wicked team...maybe you could do the same with eXT, since you could load it into Renoise....

Aodix is definitely cool....though i felt that a tracker needed a sampler at its heart....that's where all of the fun pattern effects come into play!

man, give a it couple of weeks...that's what it took me....you'll soon be flying around the interface....the only bad thing about this is that all other host you use after you get used to renoise will feel extremely clumsy....

peace

..that is why i never felt at ease with piano roll type hosts. The obviousness of a tracker, how logical it is, and how it allows me to do almost anything without the ability to actually play an instrument, that makes Renoise the only option for me. Since i've only scratched to surface of what it is capable of, i'm far from becoming sedate. Yay for Renoise!

Thanks Paul Meloday and Ephrem. Actually, Meloday, it was hearing what you did with Jaes 1's acappella and you telling me you used Renoise that gave me the idea to try it out. Sounds like I might give it a shot then. I just thought maybe the Tracker method was more cumbersome than not for someone who can use a "regular" MIDI keyboard, but maybe not after all.

Thanks

well, it will seem cumbersome at first--like any new program that you're not used to. after you get used to it :-o no floating windows...using the per track automation + the column effects are great for experimentation...on and on 8)

it works with 'regular' midi just fine....

if you're looking for a new workflow, you can't get any more 'different' than a tracker. in essence, i use it as a HUGE sampler and composition tool, then arrange if FL...
