Hello

Is there any cheaper alternative to the mighty ELektron Sidstation to make modern midified C64 goodness ?
Is the best way to go the oldschool way (buying a C64 on ebay and learning to program it) ?

There are also PCI-cards like HardSID I think. Are you bound to hardware? Otherwise there are excellent software plugin alternatives, like commercial ReFX QuadraSID and freeware UnknownC64. There are others as well, but I cant recall, someone else please fill in

HardSID Quattro is a LOT cheaper than the SID Station

I already have the amazing Odo U64pro, and even revamped the skin of the L-day Pure6581...
Oli Larkin also made one, and there are several others around.
The Cetone Synths are killers too for that kind of sounds.

Ive heard only good things about HardSID, and you DO get 4xSID chips, nice. Last I heard, the actual SID-chips are rare items these days, for instance SIDStation are out of stock because of this, if I recall correctly.

I also heard some kind of adaptor for an original C64 that makes it into an instrument like the SIDStation. I just use ReFX QuadraSID myself

By the way, I was wrong, it seems Elektron have another 100 SIDStations available. Also the Elektron Monomachine has a SID-engine in it. Check it out at:

but than the editor is just shit

at the beginning everything is amazing.. and being able to run all hvsc from proper sids in the pc/mac!!
i have the quattro so i can effectivelly have the 65** and 85** sid files running from the respective real sids.. wowahheee isn'tr that fantastic??

i love my 4 sids in my pc, but i hate its editor... best of everything for the hardsid pci card and drivers and editor devs, but as it is i wouldn't recommend it, if your planning to do ... something, apart from working on goattracker or any of that geek/lame oldshcool... shit!

Not really willing to get into trackers just to get some sounds out of the chips.
I'd like "real" chip sound with easy editing... The Elektron one seems Ok, but too pricey.

It's too clean and the filters sound also different

Elektron stuff will, for some, worth the money, as a real moog over a moog emulator..
i tried all elektron stuff, and love it, none of them are on my priorities list, as, again, will probably happen the same as happened with the Hardsid, love it, will do it like no other, but in the end, again, i'll probably never use it.. i'm not gonna want to get rid of it though.. so, that equals to... frozen money!
like buyng antiques, and shit porcelain cats made in japan in 1600's...
and now, for something completly different...
lets stare at cats!

i have to admit.. and that's the truth.. there's stuff, music, original stuff coming from those Sidstations and all elektron stuff, while from the hardsid... i don't hear much about Hardsid etc.. its more the fuss of having sids inside the pc

again, i'm and Hardsid owner, love it, will never trade it.. would love to have it properly running, but the way it is..
its just not inspiring, at all!
someone must come up with a real Hardsid editor,... the bitch as such a potential, but.. ;(
