Any chance that SampleTank will have a multisample creator?

SampleTank seems like a good platform. Great interface. Great effects. But it seems locked into the Rompler category-unless you load Akai multisamples, you have to add each sample one by one to create an instrument.

Any possibility that an instrument creator in on the horizon for SampleTank?

I have been pointing that out for almost two years now! I was always referred to third-party solutions like the ChickenSys Translator or Extreme Sample Converter. I may be wrong but I got the feeling that IK is not really interested in sound development going out of their hands.

I understand their reasoning. Only so many copies of SampleTank can be sold. Another income source is needed. This is a standard and legitimate survival strategy-if Gibson only made guitars, they might not survive.

On the other hand, IK might sell a lot more copies of SampleTank if users could easiy create their own libraries. Everyone likes SampleTank's clean interface and good effects, and I often read praises about the simple way in which it lets you play several instruments at once. But Kontakt and other softsamplers have quite an edge, since people can just load in their Giga files or soundfonts, or extract the samples and do what they want. I think people would still buy their sample sets, too--the quality is good.

Maybe some day.

So it is, and I can perfectly understand their point. But the question is: does it help SampleTank or does it hurt it? I mean, does their attitude contribute towards the development of the ST platform? I have my doubts.

Just how many libs can I choose from as a drum'n'bass producer? 160db (terribly outdated, the sounds have been used zillion times), Vintage Voltage (similar, plus it could definitely use better sampling), and Groove Capsule (partly). SonikSynth2 and SampleMoog include very good synth instruments but I'm used to the ST interface and don't want to install other plugins just to use the sounds (downloadable SS2 and SampleMoog libraries, anyone?).

So all in all, thanks to the limited choice, any d'n'b producer using SampleTank has pretty much the same sounds as I do. As creating instruments via importing samples is a real pain in the neck, I don't feel inspired and motivated to do it. Very sad indeed because there is a way greater potential behind ST than just being a sample player!

it definitely is a shame, but i think most ST users have just grown accustomed to this being a ROMpler. I enjoy the sounds I have for it and if i have to make a multisample I open up Reason. if Squids is hinting at something- then boy that will be quite a magnificent day if it happens :)

You don't realy have to install the other synths. I have the Sonik Synth 2 library in my Sample Tank2 interface. I never use SS2 itself, and since the instruments are under the same master folder, and only seperated by name into folders.

Could be but to me this sounds like having a Ferrari under the hood and driving it like a 1970s Skoda. :)

I'm not sure that IK realize what they have, given the good interface and good effects. SampleTank appears to still be missing a few features, (convolution, pedal-down samples, direct-from-disk playing, fuller filter control) but with just a multisample creator, they would attract many more people. (Apparently, Extreme Sample Converter does a good job of creating SampleTank instruments, but I can't imagine people wanting to buy a separate program just for this.)

Or maybe they're doing so well that they don't want to increase their customer base.

I was trying to make a very similar point.

Still, it's only the SampleTank 1 format. One might be better off with ChickenSys Translator, which can make ST2 instruments but the free version didn't quite convince me to buy it.

But ST2 can read ST1 instruments, so why is that a problem?

With as "basic" as the capabilities are for the importing, it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make an application that let you choose (via gui) a bunch of samples, say where you wanted them to trigger from, which velocities, and have the app create the text file for the ST import - unless I'm missing some greater purpose, I understood the import function to be less detailed than, for example, a .sfz would be - another text import example.

It is not a problem, technically. But I'm somewhat hesitant to spend extra 70 euro on something that only lets me convert to an obsolete format. Call it a question of philosophy :)

Maybe I'm just too used to ST2....but I usually have very little problems importing what I want into it. There's a few formats that are problematic without a third party program, but things like .sfz I turn into ST2 instruments all the time.

How do you do that?
