a good review here

digging deeper into the Emu X2 sampler as of late , and i need to gather raw material (sample libs are fun for only so long, and my mic cable only reaches so far

), and this looks like the device i've been waiting for...

(there's a cool track in this months Music Cafe contest by Echo Voodoo using all H2 recordings for source material)

one thing that sold me on it (besides the sound quality) is the recording buffer, you can hit record right after a sound and still capture it...

Feel free to write a bit about how it's performing. I haven't even touched one, but based on the Zoom H4 reputation, price and features, I've already recommended it to several musicians I make home recordings for now and then and think aloud about *shock, horror* perhaps buying "one of those minidisc things". It would be great to know it actually delivers the goods. Particularly interested in home recordings of acoustic instruments (piano, flute, guitar) directly with the H2's microphones. Any good?

I own a Zoom H4 and love it.
A couple things I notice though...
The H4 has 2 mics
The H2 has 4 mics
Seems they named these units backwards

Also 1 point I'll make is that the older H4 allows direct connection of XLR Mics (Two xlr inputs as well as Two 1/4 inch inputs) where the new H2 does not have this feature and only has a 1/8 inch mic input.

Anyways ... Both seem like great products for the money and as said, I'll be sticking to my H4 for now

check out the review i have linked, there are sound examples and a good rundown of the features... i'm most concerned with capturing sample material, but the H2 seems to be a good for musical recordings as well, and can record in multiple formats/sample rates (wav/mp3)...it actually can record surround with the four mics, i'm not too up on that though...

that's thrilling indeed for field recordings.

We have some birds here on the island, that make a sound like a human laughter, but it's hard to record it: you have to wait and wait and suddenly....too late....arrggghhh.

I'd missed the link. Good review, in both senses. Handy tips on recording pianos hitting the bottom of a mineshaft thrown in for good measure. Liked the choice of recording angles that the mic configuration gives, including the possibility to stick it in the middle of a room and let it capture from all sides. Also good to know it hardly ever peaks, which probably saves time finding an adequate recording level. Ok noise level, and it's versatile and easy to use. I'll keep recommending it, then.

Does the H4 have this recording buffer as well? and how long is it? I presume 5 or so seconds?
