what is the proper way to record guitars directly with an emu 1820? should i go through the xlr/1/8" combo? or one of the 1/8" line ins on the back? does a di box help me at all in this situation?

thanks for any help

YOu would go thru the front XLR/1/8th inch... You want to generate enough signal which may require the extra gain the front pre's would give you..

A dedicated DI would generally be no different than the pre's on the EMU.. Although there is some HIgh End DI boxes that would preserve more of the signal integrity.. I used to use My Presonus Eureka as a DI for bass or guitars once in awile and it osunded slightly better than the front of the EMU, ,but nothing major..

My Universal Audio 610 solo doubles as a GREAT D.I. BUt it also has tubes, and this subtle tube drive gives the D.I track some more 'flavor' that does sound better especially for bass.. BUt otherwise it isnt necessary.. The EMU is completely sufficient for your needs..
