i need a good ring modulator (that should be want really, but it feels like a need sometimes)

i am looking at the moogerfooger pedal thingy, but it's not that cheap. anyboday got one (or any other ringmod) who would care to chime in with their experiences or suggestions? it doesn't even have to be a pedal really, perhaps a modular thingy (the blacet klangwerk looks cool but again, not particularly cheap) would be a decent option.

I have this Alesis Bitrman unit. It has six effects, ring mod amongst them.

After an initial frenzy of live tweaking, I have neglected it, so don't even remeber if the ring mod fx sound decent or not. May have to dig it out again...

I don't really know what a "good" ring mod is...
I have also the Bitrman, and i do use the ringmod part : as the rest of the unit, it is pretty "in your face".
The Behringer Virtualizer Pro2024 also have a quite advanced and smoother ringmod (but i never use it), with enveloppe settings, etc.

very true

i guess you know it when you hear it (and also that it's probably somewhat personal to you) i love the ring mod on my ms20 but it won't do what i want here.

i'll have to try the alesis, seems pretty fun and quite cheap (although not a lot of places seem to have them in stock at the moment) cheers for the suggestion.

i will obviously find somewhere to try my shortlist out before i purchase but i wanted to see others experiences first, as its not easy to find a shop with a collection stand alone ring mods to try !!

there you go, we've even defined a "good ringmod", shame its so tied to the internal architecture of the synth. sounds lovely (not sure thats the right word

Personally, I think the Moogerfooger is a bit on the bland side. Here are some alternatives, mostly pedals, cheaper than the Moog and a bit more flare:
Copilot Fx Android
Electro-Harmonix Freq Analyzer
Bugbrand AudioWeevil
Frantone Glacier
Zebranalogic Modulator

Same price or pricier than the Moog:
Frostwave Blue Ringer
Studio Electronics MODMAX RingMod

For modular, the Blacet Klang Werk Balanced RingModulator 2010 is probably the one to get, it has a whole lot of features packed into it.

The FrostWave units seem to be among the most renowned (Oren Amabarchi uses it a lot).
I'd be curious to hear some mp3 demo cmparison between "good" and "bad" modulators, btw. Bt i guess it is quite difficult to make a A:B test.

The frostwave is indeed tasty. I bought it the day after KK Null pretty much exploded my eardrums live with 2 (or three?) of 'em, outside my bedroom

Why did Alesis quit making this series of effects? They were all fantastic for the money.

Alesis had this demo flightcase at Sound Expo a few years ago, with all of the units ( four if I remember correctly) plugged in series and I just couldn't let go ! Very addictive. I wish I bought another one.

+1 for Frostwave!

I added external audio+CV input to my Unicord 770 (precursor of the DV800, which is precursor of the MS-10/20/50) so I could use it as a *tuned* ring modulator (external IN vs. the Unicord Oscs, through the original traveler filter)

doepfer and analog solutions have nice modules

the metasonix stuff (TS-21 and its offspring: the little yellow sodomy boxen) is amazing untraditional ringmod. i use the TS-21 for the ultimate in shoegaze/drone sounds.
