I was thinking about a live setup with two laptops running mainly Reason , and maybe also Live, and two turntables with timecoded vinyl for controlling playback speed, and a dj mixer.
Is there a nice cheap solution for this?

Possibly Ms. Pinky + Pluggo. You can get an M-Audio Connective 4 Ms. Pinky vinyl and the software to interface with your host for $299 (or just the vinyl and the software for $99) I don't know if it will send midi beat clock out though, it may only generate pluggo sync data.

Anyone controlling Reason tempo with turntables? I think people are doing this with Live?

i know that traktor can do midi....traktor is the midi clock and i THINK you can use the timecode as the bpm/clock master

i'm not sure...i have final scratch 2 from about 4 years ago and the unit has a midi out on it...i haven't gotten around to trying it yet...but i will later this week....i'll let you know when i get off my booty and try it for suresssss

I have maxMsp, someone told me i could use a video camere and some light to read the vinyl speed, and then use a max patch to convert to midiclock.
Stuff like this is great for liveperformances, everything that can spice up email session

Anyoe know this videocamera/light thing?
Or similar stuff?

Still I'm clueless about timecoded vinyl. Appears to be just MP3 files with extra info, just like Acidized WAVs. Not??

Timecode vinyl, as far as I know, is just a record with a constant sine or square wave printed to it. The software it interfaces with tracks the pitch of the "timecode" tone and adjusts the playback speed of an MP3 accordingly.

The Ms. Pinky extensions for Max/MSP and Pluggo take that idea a step further by applying the same principles to controller data, video playback, and other syncronization types but I don't know if there is anything that will currently recieve signal from timecode vinyl and send out MTC or Midi Beat Clock to your host. I know that things like Traktor, Final Scratch, Torq and Decadance will sync to an external midi clock but I don't know if they will send midi clock that is adjusted by the pitch of the timecode vinyl.

So you play a dummy vinyl and the software adjusts to it. Simple yet effective, though you could do without me thinks. Quite an elaborate method to send the position of a pot into your DAW.

Well, the problem I see with this scenario is the fact that most hosts only have one master tempo. DJ software designed to interface with the vinyl will allow for two songs to be played at two different speeds, this way MP3s can be beat matched the way a DJ who uses vinyl would (by slowing down or speeding up the record to match the tempo of another song). I can understand having a single deck for timecode and another for real vinyl but I can't understand having timecode on both decks going into the host.

Then again, I'm not a DJ (I just play one on TV)

Im having two laptops running Reason, one turntable for controlling each laptop.
I know this is not necessary, but its because i want to get the feel of djing when performing with Reason, i actually like the process of manually getting several tracks in and out of sync as this is a skill i used a lot of time perfectioning when i was vinyl junkie (i get four decks in sync in seconds when in modus
