On a mac, you can use several interfaces from different manufacturers and mask them as all one device so say you could have a m-audio mobile pre, a mackie onyx, and a presonus interface working all at the same time in one DAW.

Are there any tools or work arounds like this for windows? I really just want the ability to have and use different interfaces for different things. An onyx for the drums, the new Line 6 for guitars and synths etc.

If there is something like this is it stable? reliable? Does it cause a lot more latency? Thanks,

check ASIO4ALL. Not only it gives you an universal asio driver on your PC with low latency, but it can manage all your I/O as if it would be the same interface. fairly stable too... and free!!

MAN! I have been using ASIO4ALL but never tried that. So in theory I could just use ASIO4ALL and use like 3 different soundcards by different manufacturers?

yep, if your version is at least 2.somthing, then you can switch on/off the I/O you want in the config. page.I didn't use it for ages and I am not in my own studio right now so I can't be very precise, but I used to do it that way.

not sure if its what you are meaning, but i have 2 soundcards installed on my system, an onboard (std Audigy soundblaster type I use for playback and gaming) and a fire wire (for audio recording). The fire wire card lines into the onboard card which lines out to a stereo amplifier that drives a couple of full size 3 -way speakers.

its all transparent. I dont use asio4 all, just each cards own proprietary asio sound driver.

so in effect when I am recording the signal would be mic->pre->firewire soundcard->cubase->onboard soundcard->Hardware stereo amplifier->speakers
