sh-201 I really am clueless about this thing - is there a good tutorial on what it is best used for? I feel like a cave man that found a starship.

here's a beginner synth tutorial provided by Roland:

start with that and the manual

search google for "basics of synthesis" "audio synthesis" "synthesizer tutorials" and other such queries - you are bound to find something that will help you with the basics of synthesis. someone here might know a good basic synthesis tutorial

sounds like you are really new to this - good luck, have fun, and don't forget that sometimes the best way to learn is just turn some knobs and listen to what they do.
