hi guys,

i just bought an external usb hard drive. for some reason while after plugging it in, suddenly my m-audio 2496 stopped playing the current song. i've tried rebooting to no avail. i'm running win xp sp2 home edition.

the usb slots are right next to the soundcard - could it be that i broke it by accidentally touching it with the usb plug and thus sending electricity in or something???

some of the times i rebooted the m-audio driver wouldn't even boot, i'd just get the internal speaker beeping like crazy. now it's supposedly working, but when i play a song it stays at 0:00... it DOES start emitting noises, but just some kind of strange gated popping. after i hit stop in winamp the pops go on for about ten seconds, then fade away.

i am really at a loss and about to f**king cry.

hopefully the stupid on-board soundcard will still work if i turn it back on in the BIOS, but still, this really, really sucks.

Just a wild, uninformed guess, but it might help: are the drive and the sound card both powered by the USB connector? If so, can you power either or both via separate plug-in power supplies ("wall warts")?

Thanks for the suggestion. Problem is that sound isn't even coming back now that I've unplugged the usb drive. If the two just didn't work together it wouldn't be so bad. But now the 2496 simply won't work, no matter what.

The most common cause of a soundcard not working, especially after some sort of physical handling of the PC, is that the soundcard has loosened.

* With the power disconnected, open the PC, remove the 2496, inspect the soundcard's PCI connector card edge for dirt or corrosion.

* Wipe the PCI connector fingers of the soundcard with a Q-tip or clean cloth dipped in contact cleaner, lighter fluid, or isopropyl alcohol. Or even a dry cloth.

* Re-install the soundcard, making sure it's seated all the way before securing it with the screw.

If the computer still doesn't see or recognise the soundcard, then the next thing is to try the 2496 in another PC, to confirm that the card is still is OK.

My experience with Audiophile 2496 is that it's a brick, and very dependable.

Sounds like some serious peripheral envy to me

! Have you tried uninstalling your USB drivers (may have to do this in safe mode)? Unplug all the USB devices, uninstall the drivers, reoobt. It should reinstall them automatically for you. Then plug everything back in..

You could also try picking up a usb card and see if that works? I've never heard of a soundcard burning out on a USB port but I have had an M-Audio firewire card burn the port on me!
