after making 'music' with sounds of nature mp3s (here - http://www.breathcube.com :) ) i realised that i immediately had to make a mammalian vocal tract. inspired by rob martino's synthasaurus model, i built a short kelly-lochbaum tract. i haven't added the vocal cords yet. using 2nd order mass-spring for better harmonics. the mp3 is 'snoring' noise and pressure with an lfo, tweaking some of the area reflection coefficients.

not only will this have some fair variety of critter sounds (1cm vocal tract or longer) it should be good for many human and alien sounds as well.

first sounds like a piglet to me :)

i'm imagining tightly sequenced animal-speak techno.. angry squirrels with giant pigs.

you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

Im imagining too! :)

The missus will love this one, "look honey, i can make snoring noises when I'm awake too now!"

:D

look forward to it, sound great fun.

added inline filtering so it doesn't sound like a glass tube now. i'd say it's good enough to fake human breathing. the tract only has 5 segments to keep it simple so i'm not so sure about consonants, it can do a modest version of all english vowels and i think tuned modulation of vocal cord model will probably allow for pitch tracking. this should purr, speak baby, do ape 'ooh' or chimp alarm cry, snarl, maybe whinny..

..i'll get back to finishing it instead of making mp3s..

Boy, this is really something. I got a VST host running on my PC (I'm a Mac user primarily) specifically for the DC and your synths have convinced me to keep it there. I was listening to your Sounds of Nature demonstrations and have just been blown away.

My friends are mostly analog synth purists and all they know of VSTs are the Virtual Analogs that emulate what they have sitting on keyboard stands. I've told them that there is more to virtual instruments than VA they asked for an example, so I showed them Oscine Tract. They were all convinced it was some kind of sample play back until I started playing around with the parameters. This is where digital synthesis should be headed. :D

I have never heard anything out of a synth like what I'm hearing from this demo. I'm very much looking forward to a vocal tract emulation. Wait until Runagate hears this!

You can't always get what you waaaant...

okay.

warning:
before you listen to this you need to be absolutely sure that neither you nor anyone who may possibly hear your speakers is sensitive to sexual material.

the formant on this vocal tract is sized at around say 5 foot tall human... it uses no breath/noise signal, only a lung pressure constant applied to the glottis. the produced sound may resemble the sounds produced during intercourse because the lfo used for testing is applying a large differential in cyclic pressure.

now.. the neat thing about this is that the circuit i have is very basic. apart from the lfo, i am only tweaking one parameter at a time.. in this mp3, either the membrane tension or the pressure constant.

you will hear that the overtones are very natural and sound like an animal inhaling and exhaling forcefully with vocal cord agitation.

sorry the file is clipped!

convincing demonstration?? :p :D

I've always wondered what that sounds like...

i hope this isn't more familiar..

..if you're not big with pigs, the last bit in the file is something i've heard a lot..

moving one area coefficient at a time.. ready to build modulators! :)

absolutely. forcefully breathing in/out description spot-on (atm it sounds a little like an ewok being abused, but that shouldn't detract). and there's articulation and pitch in there too. quite fascinated to see where this leads. :)

Those mp3s are insane! I am definitely looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Post

more indulgence..

http://www.breathcube.com/big.mp3

starts off with a 1 meter vocal tract.. ~bear/pig/monster sounds..

Terrific! What are you using for the glottal source? Is it exactly the same model than in Synthasaurus?

Post

sounds like my brother-in-law. i hope i never meet him when he wakes up. :)

*edit* sorry if i come across as flippant, but you prob know by now that's just the way i come across. i think this is great. sounds like you're hot-wiring some sort of simulacron from cyb-org spare parts, and it has "and these...were the first prototypes!" written all over it. :D
