hi, my friend and bandmate just purchased a firewire 410 to use with protools on a Dell laptop. He's hoping to use it live to play stuff like B4 and M-Tron, the two main key progs we use, but he's getting some latency and i'm lost as to how to adjust it.

In the manual it says reduce the sample rate to reduce latency. It's defaulted to 2040 i think. He sets it lower but as soon as he starts vst host(hasn't bought protools yet) the sample rate reverts back to the higher rate automatically.

He's using the m-audio asio driver. is there anything we can do to adjust the latency? Is there a better host for playing 1 or 2 softsynths live?

Sounds like the ASIO buffer size settings are defaulted when the host starts. Try to adjust the buffer size with the M-Audio ASIO control panel while VstHost is running. Maybe VstHost has a menu option to access that control panel...

ProTools is a bit overkill for gigging live. Have you tried TobyBear's MiniHost or Herman Seib's SaviHost??

protools is not for live, he just needs to learn it because its what they use at the studio where he's interning.

thanks for the hosts suggestions, we'll check those out.
