I have about 300 dollars to spend on active monitors and have been recommended these two:
i) Behringer B2031A
ii) KRK RP-5
I am leaning towards the RP-5s.
2 questions:
1. Would you buy either of these in this price range, or can you recommend better?
2. I don't have an audio interface yet - will these run straight from the iMac or would I have to wait until I picked up a Firebox or something?

May I ask why are eyou leaning towards the RP-5s? Is it just the brand name or based on 1st hand experience? On paper, I think the more logical choice would be the Behringers as they have a bigger woofer (8" instead of 5" on the RP-5) so you'd expect better bass response. Besides, the Behringer Truth has got quite a few decent reviews giving them the edge in this price range.

Well actually it is based on a load of web reviews. I see that they are both very highly rated in the price range, but I was put off somewhat by lots of reports that the Behringers were turning up DOA, have poor cabinet construction, got easily damaged in transit, and had little in the way of after market support. I'm a plug and play type, I just want something cheap and reliable that delivers acceptable monitoring - I'm doing it all on my lovely Grado headphones right now, but headphones aint enough...Cygnus X-1 wrote:May I ask why are eyou leaning towards the RP-5s? Can you arrange to pick them up at a store instead of having them shipped to your studio? That way you can test before leaving the store, and if they're damaged or DOA you can refuse to accept the bad unit(s).
I've been using B2031As for a couple years and have been satisfied with them. They're not super-duper high-dollar items but they get the job done. My ears aren't golden -- more would be wasted on them.
[edit] If you do test in-store (or for that matter, when you get them home and set them up for use) be sure to check all those little switches and pots on the back. It's easy to think a driver is blown or something when actually it's just been switched off. The Behringers have quite a few adjustments, dunno about the KRK.
