Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a Novation remote sl controller. Could anyone with one of these tell me how reliable the novation plugin wrapper is? Considering how temperamental some hosts can be with plugins and vice versa I am a little wary about introducing another layer. Has anyone for instance, tried the remote sl with synthedit or pluggo plugins? Also are the controls all still sending midi values 0-127, even when using the novation plugin wrapper?

So far everything works for me, though I am using a Mac, so I can't test Synthedit stuff. Any plugins I wrapped have worked fine. I've also set it up as a control surface for two DAWs (Logic Pro 8 and Digital Performer 5) and I haven't run into anything buggy yet - but to be fair, I haven't pushed it too far, either.
The keyboard action is great, and I'm really liking having aftertouch.

The only issue I find with SE plugs is that devs haven't named all the parameters so I get a lot of "Parameter" labeled knobs and sliders. But its easy enough to rename, rework each label, and then save it as a preset.
I've had my 25SL for a little under a year now, and absolutely love the thing. It rocks.

As far as I understand, the Automap-thingy uses some kind of wrapper to make it all work. What happens with latency? My logic tells me, that if you wrap something, the latency would go higher. Or?
And regarding SynthEdit - well. I guess that is the same thing that would happen with synths with Reaktor I guess. You get lots of "Parameter" parameters.
But how does that actually work? You just wrap a plug, it shows up on the Remote and then what? Can you choose the names yourself and which parameters are connected to certain buttons? Or is all done automagically?

The way that the parameters names are shown will be down to the choice of the developer of that particular plug-in. So if they were left blank in Synth edit, you'll see "parameter" rather than "filt 1 cutoff". The SL user can re-name all parameters, so that shouldn't really be a problem.
Regards to Reaktor, the above may be the case, but the trick is to press "revert to client" on the Novation wrapper when you load a new Reaktor ensemble. Then automap will re-scan all the parameter names, and you should see all parameters correctly named for tne newly loaded .ens

Good read Olly. Just one question... regarding latency. It wasn't mentioned in the guide, does that mean there are no additional cost in terms of latency or cpu?

I love my SL61. I don't see any additional latency with any plugs I use that are wrapped (AU and VST going into Live 7 on OS X).
The Automap Server listens to events on Port 3 of the controller and maps these to the plugin where Port 2 is used for communication with the DAW. The actual note midi data is coming in just as it normally would. I'm not sure how the CC data is interpreted on port 3, but there doesn't appear to be any noticeable lag due to the wrapper. Either way, it's damn cool the way it all works (once you finally get it configured properly). I now play with synth params I would have never touched because they are right there on the LCD.
