Adding a mod wheel to a keyboard

Hello everyone! While this is my first post, I've been surfing KVR for months. The members on this forum are very informed and helpful, and for that I salute you all.

Now to the issue. My 61 key arranger keyboard (an old Yamaha PSR-500) has a pitch bend wheel, but no mod wheel. My question is there any way to add mod wheel functionality to such a keyboard (eg. an add-on mod wheel)? If not, would buying a cheap 25 key MIDI keyboard controller with a mod wheel work (eg. by hooking the 25 key controller to the MIDI in port of my current 61 key keyboard)?

My current setup is the Yamaha keyboard hooked directly to the PC's soundcard (M-Audio Audiophile 2496) using MIDI to MIDI.

I've tried searching everywhere online for an answer to this question, so I'd appreciate any information. Many thanks to everyone in advance!

I just read the manual of your keyboard. It responds to the following CC (continuous controller) messages:
* CC 1 : vibrato
* CC 7 : volume
* CC 10 : pan
* CC 64 : sustain pedal
* CC 91 : reverb level

If the modulation wheel of another keyboard sends out on CC #1 (often that's configurable) then it works indeed.

I don't know of any seperate modulation wheel that sends midi. But there are some seperate small controllers with a few pots or faders. For instance the Behringer NanoControl that's small enough to sit on the top of your PSR-500.

Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate it! I didn't know about MIDI CC messages until you mentioned them. I will definitely look into this option more deeply, as it's much cheaper than buying a new keyboard with a mod wheel.
