Questions before considering buying Rhino

Hello,

First of all, please excuse my weak english.

I think Rhino is very attractive: sound quality, clean design, good documentation, tutorials and reasonnable price, so I am considering buying it.

But I have 2 questions before making my decision:

- Is development still in progress, or no new versions/improvements is planned? (is there a roadmap available ?)
- What about support?
- But most important, are there good free presets available (like for the Zebra wich seems a challenger for Rhino)?
- What is in the private section of the Big Tick website? Are there many more presets in there, or the majority is in the public area? I am very curious about that :-)

Thanks in advance,

Wow 4 days, 47 read and no answer.... I guess I got my answer :-(

I guess you'll get many other replies, but be patient : I've only come accross your message.

Regarding development of Rhino : I don't really know, but it is a mature product, still surprisingly up-to-date.

Support : I've never needed it (yet), but if you read the KVR developer's forum, you may judge by yourself.

Free presets : 14 free banks (of 64 presets each) can be downloaded in the public section of Big Tick website (not in the private section). Some are excellent. I can't remember if they can be used with the demo version. Some are very complex (Absynth like), some simpler (and somehow more usable). As usual, it is very much a question of taste, but again, there seems to be a lot of happy users.

I can only encourage you to download the demo, and to try it by yourself.

Best regards,

Etienne

Thanks for your kind reply. :)

I've already played for a long time with the demo and read the manual, that's why I'm considering buying it.

Since I am pretty sure I would not have enough time or patience to program myself a lot of presets, the amount of available free (or not to expensive) presets is crucial to make my decision.

That's why I'm so curious to know what is in the private area... Could you tell me?

TIA

Hi,

I dont own Rhino but can maybe shed some light on all this.

1/ The company that runs Rhino is still alive. Though Rhino itself has not been updated for a while.

2/ My ImpOscar has not been updated for years. Still it is considered as one of the best Va Vsti from the beginning. Same with Ni Fm7 who became FM8 after many years of awfully good service. (And FM8 basically means added FX and an ugly gui imho, synthesis staying the same)

3/ Who needs to update a Stradivarius or a 56 Telecaster ? If its good its good. Updating a crap synth every month will probably not make it a good synth.

4/ Rhino have many additionnal soundsets. The last one came from Himalaya and features a lot of nice and smoooth keys/pads with awsome audio demos (Search for Himalaya in KVR)

Hope this helps,

If you like Rhino as it is, I'd say take it. But .......

There are no more banks in the private area but Daniel Maurer's banks are all excellent and very very cheap(he even offers a range of bundle deals, making them even cheaper!). Tick himself has said that Daniel's presets help to keep Rhino a current synth. Go on, take the plunge...you know you want to ;)

Indeed... Big Tick is still alive... Don't expect tons of new features in Rhino soon, though, as most of my time is spent on the Mac version right now. But I definitely know people want a version with independant oscs panning, so this will probably be one of the first new features I get in Rhino 2.5 :)

Glad it's coming to Mac!

Wavesequencing, in the manner most other synths do this, is done a little differently on Rhino. Each of Rhino's Oscs can be given a different wave (or multi-wave sample) and them cycled through with the envelopes. If each Osc is given a different velocity range, the waves can be cycled through by how hard you play.

Another way to do this is to create a sample of a wavesequence and play that through Rhino taking advantage of it's filters, fx, etc. Each Osc can have a different wavesequenced sample(s) so there exist many possibilities for sonic complexities. For one bank I spliced different waves together from vastly different sources in Wavelab and created some unique sounds. Listen to DigiWaves 5 at:

Hey Tick!

Ah no, I didnt mean a 64bit version. I wanted to know if it works
in Windows x64 in 32bit mode.

Cheers,

Stevie
