Re: Early DM sample work and any availability?

I've seen a few videos on youtube etc. of guys with samples on their E-MU EmaxII boards re-creating early DM works.

Any pointers on the source of those?

Mike.

I'd like to see those videos. :)

As I remember it right there was some promotion of Magix (Music Maker) about 5 years ago where users could use Depeche Mode samples to arrange/recreate the songs. Can't find any info about it now though.

Keep in mind that, although they used some factory stuff, the majority of their samples were homemade. They went out and banged on things, recorded noises from all over (the looped sample on the bridge to "People Are People" is people laughing on an airplane that was waiting to take off), and layered all those samples to create new sounds.

He "cheated" a little bit with the samples. As he mentioned in the comments, his right hand is playing a part he programmed on his DX7IIFD. His left hand is playing samples that he recorded from the Depeche Mode "101" concert DVD. On that DVD, .

yeah, i don't think you're going to be able to get their homemade samples. as far as the factory Emax samples, you can go here to get info on obtaining them. i've actually been able to locate most of the factory disks (as image files) for free. you just have to do a little searching.

BertKoor,
Thanks, they are exactly what I saw and was referring to ;-)

That is actually not a "good" idea.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

Don't pay for samples that someone has premade, design your own sounds from the ground up, and you get much more credibility as a composer!

I made some samples during the last days. Feel free to use them.
They were made for Kontakt 4 but may also work on earlier versions. I didn't test it.

[mod edit - it's illegal to distribute samples of copyrighted material, or at the very least, against forum rules.]

Just download and unzip the single nki-file.

This file contains various samples from

Black Celebration
Everything Counts
Stripped

and drums of

Strangelove
Policy of truth
ect..

This is just a simple file made for my own work. So please don't expect too much.

Somehow I don't agree.
It's like "build your piano from the ground up, and you get much more credibility as a composer!" or "design your trumpet from the ground up, and you get much more credibility as a jazz player!".
Instrument design (real or virtual), composing, playing/ performing, mixing/mastering or arranging/orchestrating are different jobs. Sometimes they have common grounds and sometimes some people can do several of those jobs, but generally speaking, those are different.
