Ubuntu 8.04 - wineasio - record audio?

Am I the only one who can't record audio using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) and wineasio ?

I had no problems on 7.10, so I have tried different soundcards (Revolution 7.1, Delta44, Audigy2 and onboard), wine-versions(0.9.59, 1.02rc), wineasio-versions(0.5, 0.7 and a home-compiled 0.7.3 http://www.sandgreen.dk/index.php?side=linux_wineasio) and even tried on another computer with 8.04, but no luck
I have also tried on a 7.10 to confirm that it still works on 7.10, and it does.

Everything else works flawless, and I can record audio in the native XT2, but I miss my favorite vsti's.
To get some work done, I have done the basic track in wine-XT2, exported a mix and used linux-XT2 to record the audio tracks, then back to wine-XT2 where I use the audio made in Linux-XT2 to make a final mix...

I have an idea that the kernel might be the problem, but I don't have the skills to make a roolback on the kernel, and using a 7.10?... come on... it's at least a half year old

Nope... I had/have the same problem. Well, actually not being able to record audio with wine/wineasio is smallest of the problems. The native linux version won't load in my machine unless changing to different graphics driver which makes the whole system unusable.

The possible cause of this problem is that Ubuntu 8 uses PulseAudio sound server (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio) instead of EsounD, that has been used in a previous versions. PulseAudio is good (it can do very low latency), but there are still a few incompatibilities with Wine & Alsa.

The best workaround IME for Ubuntustudio to preserve from this pulseaudio crap is to use another windowmanager like windowmaker or fluxbox or whatever, but not the Gnome Desktop Environment. It is the same with KDE4's Phonen - this soundservers are made for desktop user, which doesn't produce music with JACK clients.

Definitions
desktop users: people want to hear system notifications and ogg-files the same time

New unfinished desktop users soundservers:
pulseaudio (Gnome)
phonen (KDE4)

Old desktop users soundservers, still in the most Linux installation
ESD (Gnome)
arts (KDE3)

proAudio Users need only plain alsa and the soundserver JACK.

But if musicians use a desktop environment like KDE or Gnome, a desktop user soundserver will be loaded by default, conflicting with JACK.

If you want to delete the crappy pulseaudio from Ubuntu 8.0.4, the ubuntustudio pattern will be deleted too because of a strange dependency.

Linux is a Babylonia chaos by design.
