Hi guys. I'm trying to identify the chords in this clip from a song I was writing a while ago.

http://files.filefront.com/water+temple ... einfo.html

The first 4 bars are included to establish the other parts. The chords I'm trying to identify begin at 0:10 and play for 4 bars, then repeat at 0:20. It's the resonant, string-like pad in the background.

It might be a little trickier than it seems at first...the chords in question "move chromatically" (according to a friend) and also seem to be harmonizing in a peculiar way with the first pad. I can't replicate this for the life of me. Please help! Thanks in advance.

I'm only hearing two notes per chord, but they appear to be in the same note range - did you maybe record two monophonic lines using slightly different string sounds? The lower notes sound like they're through a phaser

Anyway - here's what I can get - I've seperated the two lines by an octave, but I don't think yours are - hope it gets you some of the way there.

Hmm. scuzzphut's effort sounds really close to me, but I don't think the inversion is correct on the last two harmonies. That is, the one that's on the bottom should actually be on the top.

Here's my modified version (I also changed the octave of the first sonority because it sounded closer that way): http://www.box.net/shared/jgllhndhck

Thanks very much to both of you. I took scuzzphut's version and played with it for a while, and came up with this.

Still doesn't sound quite like the original, but it's getting pretty close...

are you talking about the pads? Me thinks they are going G minor, A minor... It is a little difficult when they are all pitch mod and what notz... Anyways, it is possible there is actually a third chord in there, but it is not at 10 or 20... The third chord might be G#.

I have made a preset on Virsyn Tera 3, which you may download if you own the synth. If not, a demo for the synth is here www.virsyn.net ( this is a very important buy. extremely special synth )

You need a Licensed copy of Tera 3 to bother with the file linked here

I have also made a wave file example. The wave file is about 8 or so bars at 120 bpm, of the preset above.... The chords, G minor, A minor... Please note, I added reverb as a send effect. you must do this. if you attempt to use my Tera preset. The preset above has only delay and chorus, but no verb...

A wave file

Lastly, there is a few seconds lead in time on that sound example.... Give it a moment, you will hear the recording.

Listening to your example a few minutes later... imho, mine isn't really close...

LOL :P :P

I think the progression is G Major - Eb Major - D Major - G Major.

I - bVI - V - I

The composer used wide chord voicings and modal mixture to form the progression. I only listed the chords in their root positions, inversions may have been used.

Modal mixture is when you mix major and minor tonalities together.

For example: G Major and g minor.

The Eb chord comes from the g minor scale.

I think you can call the chord the bVI or neapolitan also, I can't remember. It's been a long time since I studied theory.
