SampleTron vs. M-Tron Pro

Hard to compare, I know, since one of them isn't out yet. I find myself in a little dilemma. I'm crazy about Mellotron-type instruments and use M-Tron all the time. But what should I upgrade to next?
On one hand, I did get a SampleTron taste from one of the GBs and liked what I heard. On the other, M-Tron looks and sounds really cool. I'm assuming (but it hasn't been announced) that there will be some kind of upgrade path to M-Tron Pro when it comes out.
On the other hand there is this cool two-fer deal going on right now that would get me a SampleTron crossgrade and throw in SampleMoog free. On the other hand, I can take or leave Moog stuff.
On the other hand I love IK Multimedia and think SR does a great job with sampling. On the other hand, GForce aren't exactly slouches and Radiohead is supposedly touring with a beta version of M-Tron Pro right now, so that says something.
I'm starting to feel like an octopus. Buy or wait, buy or wait?
Any thoughts?

Why don't we split them?KeithAdv wrote:Hard to compare, I know, since one of them isn't out yet. I find myself in a little dilemma. I'm crazy about Mellotron-type instruments and use M-Tron all the time. But what should I upgrade to next?

Wait.
Decide when both are available so you can compare for yourself. If you can't wait until then, just buy both. I'm sure they would compliment each other just fine.

The sampletron isn't very good - or at least if you already have Squids tron collection, it's pointless - a lot of repitition, and slight variations on the same sounds. the much trumpeted Optigon sounds omit the whole point of the Optigan - the loops. There are a few examples but not enough to do anything with. I wrote them and get the impression they are saving that up for yet another product.
The Mtron Pro has at last some complete loop sets (you can hear them on the new Goldfrapp album)

Well, I have SampleTron and there ARE Optigan loops AND Talentmaker loops AND Chamberlin loops AND Powerhouse loops.monday wrote:The sampletron isn't very good - or at least if you already have Squids tron collection, it's pointless - a lot of repitition, and slight variations on the same sounds. the much trumpeted Optigon sounds omit the whole point of the Optigan - the loops. There's some crossover from Squids Tron V1 but most of what's in SampleTron is new.
It's VERY good, IMHO. It does some things that M-Tron and V1 does not do:
SampleTron-specific Macro Controls
Sustain: Allows the samples to stop (more authentic), or loop continuously (more easily playable)
Tone: Makes the sound brighter or darker, much like the "Tone" knob on the Mellotron®
Key Release: Switches between the abrupt cutoff of the classic "trons", and a more natural cutoff for optimal performance
Noise Resonance: Controls how much noise is heard in the sound
This is the reason to use the SampleTron interface as opposed to loading through SampleTank.
It also shows that the original V1 sounds included have been re-worked for SampleTron to take advantage of the new ST engine and the new SampleTron features.
Now, I admit, I don't have V1 so anyone with both can certainly correct me but we did a sound set comparison and as I reacll, came up with a substantial amount of new material.
I'm not saying M-Tron isn't great, just that your info about SampleTron isn't accurate.
Play what you feel and feel what you play.

No one trumpeted SampleTron for being a complete Optigan loop machine. It's an overall Tron Collection taking off from where Squids Tron started... it's the plug-in version featuring a lot of additional material and a re-working of the best of Squids Tron. It can do a LOT of things the M-Tron can't. Not even close comparison of FEATURES. But, in terms of sample content I think both are worth having IMO. I can't imagine anyone who is into these sounds NOT getting both to be honest. They're so inexpensive relative to the real thing. A good Chamberlin could set you back about 5K. A brand new Mellotron about the same.
Anyway, if you need a straw to break the camel's back then how about this. IK's Summer promo is BUY SAMPLETRON and get SAMPLEMOOG FREE!!!! If that's not a no brainer then... but still, I'd get the M-Tron Pro too when it comes out as surely it will have different material covered plus each tron can sound different so why deprive yourself of some of the coolest character sounds to use in your music?
http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=1935
That's if you own at least ONE IK product you can qualify for the crossgrade discount AND get the free SampleMoog.
Oh by the Sonic Reality did 100% of the sounds in SampleTron.
(Oh and Calex you're temporarily banned from the SR forum and your posts will be deleted until the ban is lifted, sorry)

Hey Squids.....
Is there any reason that we couldn't split these? I mean, I already have SampleTron and ATJHE so if I bought this deal, could I split this with someone with me keeping SampleMoog and Metal and the other person would get ATJHE and SampleTron?
Just asking.....

I don't see why not as long as only one of you registers of course. But that's not an official answer.beergeek wrote:Hey Squids.....

- put your SampleTron instruments in, for example: D:\SampleTank 2\STInstruments\SampleTron
- rebuild your SampleTron and SampleTank lists
- now you can access all your SampleTron stuff as usual
- AND use all the SampleTron instruments with your SampleTank instruments
The only disadvantage is that ST2.5 will take a little longer to load (even with Relist off).

Oh my God! I just logged in to check what my price was with my membership. I'm definitely not quoting the price for obvious reasons, but this deal is very difficult to resist.
I really wasn't that interested in either product as I really think you have to be a certain kind of person to really appreciate a product like SampleTron (and any other 'tron product really.
SampleMoog is a little different of course, I don't really think you have to be a certain kind of person to want a Moog sound in your arsenal. Well - maybe you have to be breathing and like writing music, but I just know of some cheaper alternatives in the sample set arena (admittedly not in the same class as this product - but probably passable unless you're an enthusiast).
But crikey Squids - at the X-Grade price with membership savings it's like being on the edge of a black hole and trying not to get sucked in.
Must........resist..........temptation.
If someone really is considering a tron instrument though it seems insane not to consider a 2 for 1 on SampleTron and SampleMoog even at full price.

I tried the demos for both Moog and Tron last night... Youre right Caleb about the Tron, it is for a certain kind of musician but I'm gonna go for the deal anyway because I just love the quality of IK products (and Squidz sampling skills of course)...And I know there will be tons of useful stuff in there...
Having said that there was a small selection of lo-fi loops in the Tron demo which I thought sounded very interesting..I look forward to hearing the full set..I could find some cool uses for them...
The Moog has some killer sounds for electro type bass lines too...They really cut through the mix and had a presence I havent heard with many softsynths..

You didn't read my post properly - I said that there were a few examples but not enough to do anything with (ie they aren't complete). all the publicity and promo leading up to the sampletron release didn't reveal this. A lesson: the whole point / essence / charactor of the optigan / talentmaker was the loops - you can't represent that without even one complete set. And if you have the instrument and the optical records for certain sets to sample - why not sample the whole set? - how much more difficult would that be? Seems like it's a 'taster' - leaving the door open for yet another edition in the future.
My opinion is that if you have the earlier Tron set and M-tron - you don't need this

You can see a sound list comparison between SampleTron and Squids Tron V1 at the following link
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=218097
There are a lot of new samples in SampleTron, and like Squids wrote, the presets for the existing soundsets have been worked over and improved since
Squids Tron V1.

That's not really the point - this is a piece of digital information - very cheap to make and reproduce rather than an actual artefact. But can you explain why you didn't include at least one complete set of Optigan or talentmaker chord sets? I am assuming you have played one and will know that that doesn't make sense - even as demonstration. To have a partial set, you can't play it as it was meant to be played - the chord set was the main feature of the thing - it's just frustrating. And you must have the optical records to sample from right? So why not do a full set? It seems rather odd.Squids wrote:No one trumpeted SampleTron for being a complete Optigan loop machine.
