Do you mean the "VOICES" preset? Using 16 voices, I can't get more than 40% cpu at 2.0 ms latency (M-Audio 2496 card @ 96k) in win xp sp 1. The computer is an Athlon 1600 (1400Mhz) with 768Mb ram.ttoz wrote:Well, I am really curious to see how people cope with using Rhino realtime...on this patch, which is the third down on the left in the dx7 type bank, if I set it to 8 polyphony, by using that complete 8 it will take my athlon 3200 to 90% cpu at 2.9 ms latency in Win2k Sp4...
Trying with 16 voices will just never happen..
Maybe it really is time to get myself a creamware scope or something to handle my synth work...
This happens both in Chainer and Cubase SL 1.06.

Major problem indeed!
That being said, it seems I have a major problem, if your 800mhz slower cpu is using 50% less cpu than mine!
Dougby, could you make sure, that even though you have selected 16 polyphony, that all 16 voices are actually being played? like, go crazy holding chords down all over the keyboard...Also, is it Rhino 1.07?
I am sure that at least 16 voices were used. (I used my whole lower arm on the keys!
And yes, it is 1.07, I just purchased a few days ago.

Sorry, don't use Logic, I use Cubase SL so I can't help you there.ttoz wrote:
do you use the ambience reverb? i would be interested in seeing if my problems are rhino related or if indeed my cpu is underperforming...
... and it is a cpu hog so it's an easy one to test and compare..i get 9 stereo in a logic multitrack environment, 10 at a pinch...this is at the default 100% cpu setting..
www.smartelectronix.com
could you do that simple test for me?
Thanks, I would really appreciate it...
oh and back to rhino, dont forget the voices patch defaults at 8 voices so make sure you have adjusted it to 16...(sorry if that was obvious but i am thinking of every possible reason)

Maybe I'm missing something, but why are you so concerned with being able to play 16 notes at once? Do you have 8 fingers on each hand?
Yes, I just started using Ambience. Are you using it with Rhino? With the default Ambience Patch 'Papen-bright and Long' and Rhino in Chainer, I get 73% CPU useage. Compare that to my previous results and your results. The easiest thing would be to just use Rhino, no Ambience.
I don't get what you mean by '9 stereo'. Nine what?
Which version of Rhino do you use? My 1.07 defaults to 16 voices for the 'Voices' patch.

Voices, third patch down left hand column of the dx7 bank, as I have been for all of this.ttoz wrote:
And lastly, what rhino patch are u testing ambience with to get that 73% usage?
TIA
Something just came to mind. Are you using the standalone version of Rhino(Rhino.exe), or the VST version? Reason I ask is that I have been using the
VST plug. Last night I fired up rhino.exe and the default settings were a lot poorer. For one thing, rhino.exe uses the Microsoft GS wavetable as default
midi out.
Also what audio card are you using?

Hi,
I think this "voices" preset is a bit special: it features *really* long release times (especially for oscs 2 and 4 where they're about 12 and 8 seconds long). This probably explains why this preset can be so cpu-intensive... Try to reduce the release time of all oscillators to less than 1 second. That shouldn't change much to the final sound, but make it much easier on your cpu...
