Hi,

There's a sound that is used a few times in the Prison Break Original Television Soundtrack.
I can't really describe it, as to me it sounds very different from the common sounds.

Just have a listen, and help me re-create it, please:

Also, what do you think about the pad?
Is it synthesized, or it's from an orchestra sample?

It sounds like the attack of a flute-like thing, possibly a panpipe, played very staccato.

Here's a flute-sampleset from www.prokits.co.uk that has round-robin attack samples, but I don't know if its close enough for you: mp3 demo (wait for higher octave to come in on demo) and web page (its £3.50).

Pad doesn't sound synthesized, its a string section sample (or god forbid, a real string section).

If I had the right sample - do I need a sampler to change it as needed?

Not sure I understand the question - if you already have the sample that sounds right, then you can just drop it on your track and you're done.

If you only have a sample of a single note, then it probably won't sound realistic if you repeat it quickly as in your example (its the dreaded "machine-gun" effect). So, you would probably want to have several alternate samples (ie. round-robin alternation).

It's a Peruvian or Bolivian Pan Flute, played staccato, with reverb and a touch of delay.

I would need a longer sample to determine the background orchestra - but more than likely it is a sample collection like Vienna, EWQL or Kirk Hunter, or a good set of orchestral and string patches from hardware synths or samplers.
