A production team / band I love dearly
Listening to alot of their studio material, I'm struck by the "live" sound to it - as though it's all analogue synths & old drum machines being recorded by mic'ing big amp speakers.
As though they are playing live in effect.
Am I reading too much into it or is this to do with the approach they take ?

Try putting your stuff through clean guitar & bass amps and hi-fi speaker and mic up the results and record back into your computer. Think outside the box 
Edit: BTW i dont know who LCD Soundsystem are but you can make your samples sound very lively doing the above and i gather super clean results are not what you want so use shitty mics and pre-amps...etc and stuff like that. You will be surprised at the muck you get my messing around. If you have a cassette recorder then record some of the samples onto a nasty old cassette and back again. Its good fun in the process

I know what you mean, i have listened to some of their music a while back. Theres a definite roomyness there, but whether its real or not i dont know.
Boards of Canada record a lot of their stuff through their hifi mic'd up, could be an idea to try?

I think the biggest thing for me is real drums played by a real drummer.
Make's a huge difference on a track like Get Innocuous.
Sounds of Silver is the only album I have, so I'm not fully up to speed. Some of the tracks are genius, though

Indeed, I don't think there's any plugin magic. From what I've read they're very much about bring a punk/no-wave ethos into electronic music. Real drum kits, real players, analog synths.
Not to say with a little mucky muck you couldn't approximate the sound. I'd start with BFD and a fair helping of room tone...
If they haven't already, maybe CM could do a "Sound Like..." for LCD.

That will be the microphone bleed as well as 'room sound' which is not really do-able to samples (what Scuzzphut is referring to), but! you could try this:
mutli re-micing your drum samples with different mics through your hi-fi speakers whilst playing other elements back through your monitors to bleed into the mic's could help as well as getting you some of the phase combing through the various mic's.

Add a little bit of reverb at a low volume and run it through a lofi effect. Should sound about right.
GENERATION 30: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
