Just doing a little work here preparing for the NAMM show and I am listening to a bunch of stuff I got from Nick Davis when I was in the UK last month. Two things that if you're a Genesis fan you'd be crazy not to get. One is the Gabriel-era box set. I just listened to Selling England By The Pound in surround and I cannot tell you what a fun experience that is to be in the MIDDLE of all of the instruments and vocals around you like that. You can hear all sorts of parts you never heard before and I have it set up in my studio where I can isolate each part/channel if I want to hear something more than something else... almost like a little bit of mixing control (plus the lead vocals are acapella in the center channel which is just TOO much fun to play with and hear). You can also learn a lot about how they produced these records. For instance hearing the vocal channel on its own with the effects like delays you can hear exactly what the delay is doing if you ever wondered. It's almost like having the multi-tracks. Hats off to Nick for doing such a great job with these mixes. I finally have all of them now. If you don't have the box sets and even a small 5.1 surround system if you are in any way a Genesis fan you might want to look into that one! In a time where you rarely hear anything like this stuff it is almost like rediscovering it (and for some people it IS discovering it for the first time if you haven't heard those classic 70's Genesis albums - takes a little getting used to like an acquired taste).

The other thing I got from Nick was a remix he did recently of Tony Banks' "A Curious Feeling". Actually I saw the reference disc laying there at The Farm and said to Nick "Uhhhhhh, can I have that?" and luckily he didn't need it anymore. I am not even sure if this is out yet but when it comes out if you wanted something that was almost like a long lost Genesis album in between Wind & Wuthering and And Then There Were Three this is about as close as it gets to that... just missing Mike and Phil. Although if Mike and Phil DID play on this it really WOULD be a Genesis album. The keyboards on the album are what make it. Some really nice instrumental bits and the keyboard sounds are the most LUSH analog... just beautiful. Well, I remember the original album sounding a little "home-made" so I was "curious" (No pun intended) at what Nick might have been able to do to bring it back to life and now that I've had a chance to sit down and listen to it I am blown away! It sounds GREAT! I only wish Phil was singing. I wonder what that would have sounded like. The vocalist on that album is okay but kind of one dimensional. That's the only thing. But, man, the musical parts and instrumentation is so Genesis. I haven't listened to this album in probably 20 years though so forgive me for getting excited. Haha. Anyway, if that is out or coming out or an import or whatever you might want to try and find it! It's Squid recommended.

When I was at The Farm I went into the forbidden warehouse and saw the original drum kit that was either on this album or The Fugitive (I think The Fugitive actually). You know, I'll post some pics in here from The Farm sessions last month. We have a lot of them on our myspace page but I know a lot of people here still haven't seen it and also I have more so... I am in a Genesis mood this week so I will post some in honor of their awesome new Box Set. Treat yourself to it or convince someone to get it for you as a gift. It's a good one!

I love "A Curious Feeling". It is VERY Genesis.

After i first heard Curious Feeling, i have always felt that Tony Banks added a whole lot more to the Genesis sound than most people recognize. He's kinda in the shadows of Phil and Peter, but then i discovered all my favourite Genesis tracks was written by him. Gotta love One for the Vine.

I have the import because it was one of Nick's own copies and it would be the PAL one with the SACD. He signed it for me too which was nice (I don't normally ask for an autograph but this was his work and he was giving me one of his own sets that the label gave him so I had to... kind of sentimental since he invited me to sit in on the remixing of Mama in 5.1 a year or two ago).

Yes, Tony was such an integral part of Genesis. The music on Curious Feeling is great and if they had somehow fused together this material with And Then There Were Three then that would have made it a more classic Genesis album on par with many of the others. And Then There Were Three could have used a couple longer tunes with the big keyboard solos... so what if it was becoming a cliche' at that point. A big Gilmour guitar solo is cliche' for Floyd but that never stopped him. ;) Unlike Tony's later solo albums this one, Curious Feeling, is a real KEYBOARDIST'S album. I mean the others are too but this has more instrumental bits and those are some of the best moments of old Genesis songs. Also, I believe Chester is on Curious Feeling if I'm not mistaken. Somewhat close to Genesis style drumming going on. If it was Phil singing and a bit more guitar you'd swear this album was Genesis. Imagine that!
