I was thinking of making a track using the Japanese Flute and Mandolin. What scales should I use for these instruments. Also, what is their range? Also, would major or minor key be suitable. Any help would be appreciate.

The major pentatonic is more typical of Chinese than Japanese music, although a lot of Japanese music borrows from Chinese music. Japanese music uses a different type of pentatonic mode. The one I'm most familiar with is:
C-Db-F-G-Bb
1, b2, 4, 5, b7 compared to the regular ol' major scale.
When you play it you'll immediately recognize the sound.
