I'm looking for a vst that can create the sort of warm and fuzzy sounding bass that's common in "trip-hop" groups like Portishead or Massive Attack.

Well, that's a pretty vague question. If you're not talking about any bass sound specifically, and you just mean the general warm bass vibe of their music, there is only one way to achieve this: go crate digging and sample from old vinyl records. That's how this style of music is done, and that's why it sounds that way.
