I feel as though a part of me has died. javascript:emoticon('') Due to the Canadian dollar's collapse over Cold Turkey's slide in the charts, I was forced to reconsider my intention to purchase Ocean Way Gold and go with BFD 2 at half the price despite my platinum eSoundz status. With the dreaded LM4 MKII as my last drum module purchase in '99, needless to say, I was blown away with the in-store BFD 2 demonstration on Boxing Day. Sold!! Yesterday, I received my copy of SOS (I love you Paul White and Martin Walker!). Sweetwater has a four page ad which includes something called Ocean Way Silver. I see no mention of it anywhere on Ocean Way's website or eSoundz. Darling, I would have waited for you had I only known. Can we ever be together? I haven't even installed BFD 2 yet. I swear, we're just friends.

First of all, BFD2 is fantastic. So, you shouldn't regret that purchase. It's a lot of fun and does some very cool things. Plus, we're also making drum kits for it as well (not Ocean Way Drums but others).

As for Ocean Way Drums Silver... the cat is out of the bag early in the ads. So much for a January issue coming out in January! ;) Well, the official announcement was for NAMM but we might announce it early and I can tell you what it is in a nutshell. Half the kits, half the price. It has all of the same features per kit though with snare on, snare off and 6 mix presets, full discrete control. It's kind of a "Best of" too so for many people that may be all they need (and for the guy that wants it all we have GOLD and for the guy who wants it all at the highest fidelity you can hope for we have the PLATINUM for 96K and conveniently pre-installed on a 10,000 RPM hard drive). OWD is 48K and 96K and BFD is 44.1 which for most people's ears may not make a difference. I think what does make a big difference between OWD and pretty much everything else I've heard out there is the crisp and natural highs. Allen Sides is the ultimate guru of mics and the way this was recorded is just so punchy and present without being shrill. Very OPEN sounding and the room ambience as well is just in its own unique place in the market. The blend of these three stereo ambient mic channels is one of the key elements to its sound. That and two sets of stereo directs on the snare and even a stereo BOTTOM snare mic... pretty deluxe. Nothing else has this.

So... don't sell your BFD2. It's awesome! You'll love it. But if you can sell something ELSE and pick up OWD Silver next month when it is released... well... you might find the two to compliment each other well.

Half the kits! Half the price! It sounds like a winner to me as it puts OWD squarely in the same price ballpark as most of the competition. We'll see how BFD2 does with the TD20 V Drums we just picked up. I'm an I-Map guy at heart.
For those of you not in the loop, those are actually my hands playing OWD with I-Mapping in the videos. I'm dead serious...

What videos? THESE? www.oceanwaydrums.net/video.php Those are Squids tentacles. ;)

One cool thing about the V-Drum mapping in OWD is the positional crossfades. You don't get that in anything else that I am aware of. It works on the snare, hats and ride. When you go from the center of the snare to the edge it does a cool switch and also round robin on that and the toms. It was a lot of work just to have that dedicated support. But someone had to do it. The V-Drum kits are so popular... and fun to play! (I'm better on i-map though) .
