When you listen to music...

Do you just enjoy it or do you find yourself analyzing the mix, how they did what and how you would fix it. I know as an editor I typically find myself able to read for enjoyment until I come across things I would never have allowed through. It's distracting. I find myself doing this with music more than I used to. Doesn't seem like a good habit.

Constantly! I've noticed allot of things lately too......
I just got the cars first record (5.99 at borders.....wth....) and found myself analysing the mix, noticing how over limited the drums are, how good the guitars are mixed, and the "analog" warmth of the vocals. Also, the keyboard stuff is mixed in overthetop, probably on purpose!
It's more fun than watching all the perfectly sculpted people when I'm at the gym

Never. I will certainly notice good or bad production but I am always focused on the songs, so it's never a distraction. I can force myself to be more analytical if I hear something I like and want to figure out how it was done but it's usually an effort.

I do the same...and since I've begin playing music (over 30 years now)...I have lots of problem looking at live gigs and really enjoy it...I see so much fake...it's bad...so I don't go that much to live concerts...unfortunatelyeduardo_b wrote:Do you just enjoy it or do you find yourself analyzing the mix, how they did what and how you would fix it. But hey...that's my problem...There is some exceptions, often when I'm looking at a true virtuoso or musicians that can improvise well...or musicians that do some really interesting things on stage theatrically...but those are quite rare...too much of the same old thing...for me anyway
Same with music....I hear so much repetition it's kind of boring...but it depends...if a tune got that special shivering stuff in it, I'll dig it and appreciate it...a good performance is always a good performance!...and that will survive the test of time
It's hard to go back in time and forget about your technical and musical heritage...but sometimes I would like to

sometimes yes, sometimes no...often when I just listening to music I'm listening to music I'm very familiar with already. Sometimes I notice little things and wonder how did I miss that? For instance the beginning of ozzy's tribute randy rhodes comes in at the beginning of I don't know at about 5 times the tempo until the drums come in. I didn't notice this until a couple years ago.
Other times I hear something I particularly like or dislike and it stands out, for instance I'll hear a compressor breathing (happens a lot with music choice) and I can't shut it out. Or on the other side a good example is a couple Journey songs. I really do not like Journey at all, but a couple of songs have some great production on piano and I can't help but admire it.
It depends on what my listening level is, often I'm doing something (like posting) while listening to music and the music is the background. Honestly I have more of a problem listening to tv, I'm over critical there. I guess because I am actively listening when I watch tv, especially sports. Hockey is the worst, they have mics on the boards but apparently no one has figured out what the pad button is for and I want to reach through the tv an fix the gates. Someone should tell them you're not suppose to hear the gates.
I cannot stand movies where the sound fx are way too loud, I have to ride the volume to avoid bothering neighbors. Besides it's a cheap stunt o use loud volume to scare you instead of good writing

Yeah, there's are allot of interesting points there. I'll add (while trying to stay on topic) That tv commercials are terrible to listen through speakers (up and down and up and down and blaring and too soft......etc etc) But I love listening to the commercials with cansHink wrote:sometimes yes, sometimes no...often when I just listening to music I'm listening to music I'm very familiar with already. i think i focus on both and i have fun doing it, i dont really try to worry,oh am i distracting myself, to me i simply see it like, a guitar player hears a metal song differently than one who doesnt play, basically dont think of it as overanalyzing the song, as long as your still enjoying it, think of it as understanding the song... thats my two bits.

There's a little $30 device I bought on Amazon that's a limiter for TV, about the size of a deck of cards, if that. You run the audio output from the cable box (or TV) to it (RCA cables) and then to the audio input of the TV. It works nicely, or did until I hooked a HD cable box to the TV using an HDMI cable. Fabulous video, but no limiting on audio now.Hink wrote:I cannot stand movies where the sound fx are way too loud, I have to ride the volume to avoid bothering neighbors. that sounds awesome, but I'm digitally connected for audio. I don't have surround (but my receiver is 7.1) of course it comes to me through those Polk 10s. But I should do some googling because maybe something else is out there. Thanx for the tipeduardo_b wrote:There's a little $30 device I bought on Amazon that's a limiter for TV, about the size of a deck of cards, if that. I'm glad you brought that up though, I may revert!

A little of both; since I'm not a professional sound engineer, I tend not to care so much about whether the song was mixed properly, rather how they mixed it and what types of things they did to make it sound 'big'.
I do get pissed off at songs that use heavy compression (read: Metallica) but I have very few songs that I like with that problem.
