Recording audio input and output

For Solo Cantabile:
I can record the input, which captures the MIDI accompaniment track. Or I can record the output, which gets the VSTi piano I am playing. But I can't discover how to get both at once on the same track, as I'd like. Is it impossible? The Input and Output cannot both be highlighted at the same time, as they can be for MIDI recording.
Also, the recording levels I do get are low. I can't find a way to adjust level. Recording 24 bit, with sound card output (Delta 1010) always at maximum. It's not absolutely terrible, so I suppose I could just normalize them later. But I'd rather get some bigger waveforms on the first go. Is there a way to tweak it?

Hi
Not sure, but can's you simply assign external audio input to a rack and mix it that way to the output audio stream to record it all then?

The only problem with that is you'll be outputting the input audio, possibly getting feedback loops etc...TiUser wrote:Not sure, but can's you simply assign external audio input to a rack and mix it that way to the output audio stream to record it all then?
I've had both these items (ability record in&out + adjustable record levels) on my list for a while now, but just never got around to them. I may be able to do the first one this version, the second probably not.

Ok, that depends on what you record and how you route... that's an old story in any such audio setup... and nothing special with cantabile.bradr wrote:The only problem with that is you'll be outputting the input audio, possibly getting feedback loops etc...TiUser wrote:Not sure, but can's you simply assign external audio input to a rack and mix it that way to the output audio stream to record it all then?
But Performer has so many (well hidden) busses that it might be the time to think how to "sell" these better for practical use... it's technically so much already there in cantabile...

It's understandable there was not time to write in these things so soon (for build 2012). Should we hope for next time, or will it likely require longer than that?

It's still on the list, but I haven't even had a chance to investigate how long it might take. It's possible it might make it in an upcoming build but I cant promise anything.

Hi, I was actually looking for a way recording both input and output. Looks I'm not the only one looking for this feature. Guess this one is an 'obvious' feature.bradr wrote:lallis wrote: It's still on the list, but I haven't even had a chance to investigate how long it might take. I did found a work-around with my emu card. There's an E-Wire vsti plugin which allow you to root the output of a ASIO channel to the input (return) of the card, allowing to record the input with the added VSTi instruments in Cantabille.
This is not the ideal solution, since your getting a double signal (feedback). I'm running with a latency setting of 4 ms, so the impact is bearable. I know this isn't the ideal solution though.
I hope to see a software solution in Cantabile since Cantabile is realy great to combine a main hardware synth with additional VST instruments (even in a live setup!).
Anyway, keep this thing going Brad, because Cantabile is build on a great concept and is realy musician friendly. (btw: the auto record feature is great!!!)

Update on my previous post: I've found a more elegant solution to record both in- and output with my EMU setup:
- In the patchmix from DSP, insert an 'Insert Send' on the Asio strip that is playing the VSTi instruments in Cantabile
- Next, in Cantabile activate the Asio in channel added in previous step in the audio setup
Patchmix will send the output from the VSTi now to Cantabile assigned Asio input. Since you now have both an Asio-in and physical-in channel, you'll be able to record both hardware and software instrument.
If you don't have an emu card, check your audio card's manual to see if you can do any patching. It's also possible that there is a VSTi out there that can do the virtual patching, but to be honest, I would prefer not to many components running on my DAW when performing. So... still hoping to see the patching trick solved within Cantabile.
In the mean time, I hope this solution can help some of you guys...

This is now possible in build 2015, which is uploading now...

Very nice. It works well. Many thanks!bradr wrote:...possible in build 2015, which is uploading now...
Would it be possible to have the default recording choices set like the MIDI recording ones? It would save me from false moves if both "Record Input" and "Record Output" were always selected on first opening.

Not exactly sure what you mean by "like the MIDI recording ones" but...
These settings are saved in the session file so you can set them how you like the save the session. If you're using Solo or Performer you could also update the default session - Options -> General Page -> Default Session -> Set.

Done. Should have thought of it myself. Thanks.bradr wrote: These settings are saved in the session file so you can set them how you like the save the session. If you're using Solo or Performer you could also update the default session - Options -> General Page -> Default Session -> Set.
