Hanging notes with Zebra in Reaper

Hello

I get hanging notes in a project in Reaper. I'm on an XP machine (Pentium 4) and I don't normally get problems with Zebra and Reaper.

I've got this pattern with short staccato notes and now and then one note hangs, while the other keep playing as normal. The preset used is HS Chhhh (in the root Leaders folder):

http://vimcortez.free.fr/tracks/zebra%2 ... 0notes.MID

Note that this project is set to 48000 Hz.

In the same project I get odd stereo drifting with some presets, i.e. the sounds moves slightly from right to left and back, apparently randomly, with presets that don't look that they're supposed to do this: Zebra Food by Menno Meijer > Bass > Acid Bass and Ballsy Bass. I'm pretty sure it's not my listening equipment since even the track meters show a difference in level between both sides.

Anyone else can reproduce this in Reaper in a project at 48000 Hz?

thanks

I'll try tomorrow :)

Thanks ;)

Tried to recreate using Z2 2.3.1 in Live 7.0.14. I tried HS Chhhh, Acid Bass, Ballsy Bass. I got no stuck notes. This was at 44.1K and Live's default BPM 120.00. It might be a stuck note in Reaper's midi implementation.

Well, we had the topic recently and I too am sure that my note handling is pretty bullet proof. I will however happily find out what's going on, e.g. log events to see who's at fault.

Thanks Urs. It might well be Reaper but I have no way to check that at the moment. Plus it's sort of random (eg. when the clip is played in loop mode, the notes don't always hang) and it might have to do with the 48000 Hz setting.

For the time being the workaround is to bounce down the tracks in question.

bmrzycki, the stuck notes occured with HS Chhhh; Acid Bass and Ballsy Bass give me an odd stereo left/right drift but no stuck notes. Do you also get the stereo drift?

I didn't hear anything odd when playing the notes through all three presets. I think the problem is related to note on/note off messages. In a lot of synths you send:
note 60 on
note 60 on
note 60 off

There won't be a hung note. This is because if a note is already being voiced and midi asks for it again, it will retrigger it. The note off will then shut it down.

In zebra however, it adds another voice of the same note. This means the exact same pattern above would lead to a "stuck" note because there isn't a second note 60 off. Your pattern is a bunch of tight notes of D and F# very quickly repeated. If the midi source in Reaper were to make a mistake with on/off pairings it could easily lead to stuck notes. As I mentioned I don't hear it in Live which lends me to believe it's related to the midi source and not Zebra. I let it loop several times just to be sure.

As for your drift, it may be unintentional midi mapping. Try deleting the midi map file found at C:\program files\u-he\Support\com.u-he.Zebra2.midimap.txt
and see if the problem disappears.

Hmmm, have been running it in Logic @ 280bpm for quite some time now... no glitches...

Will try Reaper...

Same in Reaper @ 250bpm ... no hanging notes after a couple of minutes, even when playing the same notes on top of it from a keyboard

Thanks bmrzycki and Urs, looks like a problem wtih Reaper or something. By the way which version of Zebra am I supposed to be using? At the moment I'm using 2.3.1

thanks

BTW concerning the "stereo drift" I get with the bass presets I mentioned, I also get them in Cubase4. But then again maybe that's how these presets are supposed to be, it's hard to tell.

A simple way of checking this even if you can't hear a significant drift (I hear with the headphones on, would probably not hear them through the speakers) is to look at the track meters, they do not move together. Try this: hit the same note in a quick succesion and you'll see that the stereo image changes (drifts) a little. But again, perhaps that's how it is supposed to be with these presets.

Thanks

I'll check that stereo issue tomorrow 8)

This is easily reproducead, as it's the result of LFO1 being mapped to modulate panning on the leftmost channel of the synthesis grid in both patches :P (It's a very slight amount in each case, so pretty easy to overlook.)

thought as much :D

sorry!

still get the hanging notes though... but maybe it's Reaper's fault.

I get them too in REAPER. It happens with any project with Zebra. If I stop playing the track at any point while there is MIDI data playing Zebra, the note will hang until I hit play again...or rewind, etc.
