Scarbee is VERY hard to duplicate as its probably one of if not THE best epiano emulation out there. The only thing I can suggest is MRRay73 MKII from GSi Soundware.

These 2 imo are probably the best emulation wise. The only other suggestion would be to pick up a real Rhodes.

I demoed Mr. Ray MkII before I bought the Scarbee VKC for Halion. I still bought Scarbee. My. Ray is a bit weak in the mid and upper registers. There are no problem is those registers with Scarbee.

Just a slight tweak..


A little pedal action on the tremelo width and timbre set to bright, thats it..

My friend had two MkI's and generally they didn't at all sounded the same. Actually, one of them sounded surprisingly close to a Wurly. However, the other one sounded pretty much exactly like Scarbee.

That said its a nice sound, but on some notes sounds a bit artificial...

It's a sampled Rhodes. It cannot by definition sound artificial, because it's a recording of how (one particular) true genuine Rhodes sounds.

I've had a tendency to think that a lot of Rhodes emulations and sample-based synths sounded more muffled than the original.
But then I sat by an old friend playing his suitcase Rhodes and there was a lot more muddle than I remembered. I think the wide variation in the old Rhodes' sound based on wear and tear and road abuse is one thing and the more crystalline sound we've come to associate with digital electric pianos has also confused memories of what a Rhodes actually sounded like. It's more like that crystal bell sound rises up out of a morning fog over a swamp.

For software
I use Lounge Lizard and also a number of excellent daniel Mauer presets for rhino.

But I also practice on an old Tx-7. That bit of hardware is the real deal -- and still quite a bargain on e-bay. Casio cz series had a very icy crystalline piano sound and those are even cheaper.

whats that horrible scratchy sound in the mr ray demo? is it mp3 artifacts? only seems to occur on the key hits

For me, EP samples are like acoustic piano samples. Can't have enough. I have Scarbee with the Halion player and for Kontakt. I also have the wurlie by Sampletek... and I am eyeing precisionsound's rhodes and wurlie. Oh yeah, I also have Mr Ray.

But if I had to pick one, I'd go with Scarbee.

That might be a big deal for brass and wind emulations, but hardly for proper keyboard emulations.
