Hello All,
It's been a couple of months since I've been here. I wanted to let you guys hear and give me feedback on my latest track. It's heavily inspired by Japanese Classical music using he Koto (Japnese stringed instrument) and the Cello. I orginally intended for the Shakuhachi flute to be in the track, but I gave it's part to the cello, and I didn't feel like writing another piece for at the moment. Also, it required more in depth midi editing than I have time for. Anyway, here is the track. Enjoy

Note: This isn't the final version of the track. I want to make it sound even more Japanese.

Mike777 and Polyslax,
Thanks a lot for listening! I'm glad you guys like it. I might make make a more traditional Japanese track the next time. I'll probably keep this track the way it is after wrestling with it in my head. I should say for now that it's heavily inspired by Japanese classical music instead of being an exact replica. When I assigned the cello as the accompanyment, I absolutely loved it. Originally, it was going to be the shakuhachi and the shamisen, but I felt that I didn't stay true to the instruments so I changed them to instruments that I thought would better fit and here we are.
I have plans for another track that will probably be closer to what I originally wanted with this one. It will probably be a slower tempo than this and have the shakuhachi and the koto and do a call and response type melody or at least that's what's in my head. I would like to have the melodies interweave.
Again. Thanks for listening, and I would greatly appreciate more comments.

Very nice, especially the cello sounds great. The koto is a little too "static" for my taste. Not sure if it's intentional but it seems quite repetative, like there's no round robin or something. Especially with that non-damped note, once I noticed that it got on my nerves a bit
Otherwise, lovely track!

Thanks core. You gave me some ideas for improvement. You definately have a point about the koto being repetitive. I will recompose that part so that it seems less static. I had the 1st bar repeat every other bar so I think I should change that.core wrote:Very nice, especially the cello sounds great. The koto is a little too "static" for my taste. The damp note bothered me, too LOL!!! I might change that as well. I think it was a by product of using Band-in-a-box humanize function on the melody. They tend towards the jazz side of things which can have unintentional results. Thanks again.

Even though, I posted a new version, I'm still refining it. I discovered that some of the notes in the melody weren't in the Japanese Pentanic scale, so I'm in the process of fixing that. In addition the cello is not in the scale so I will adjust that as well. I'm still undecided about what to do with the cello in the chorus. I might double notes by octaves instead of what you currently hear. The close to final version will probably be uploaded this week.

I decided to leave the cello alone. I couldn't get it to work on the Japanese Pentatonic scale. It needed tension, which the scale doesn't provide so I left it purely in G minor. However, the koto is strictly in the Japanese Pentatonic scale. Overall, it's almost a clash of styles (East meets west), which is fine by me. I modifed the melody for the koto again inorder to remove the 32th notes that I put in the second revision because it just didn't sound right in the context of the track. The latest version is available. Enjoy.
