Hal Leonard has a Style Series of music books and just so happens there's one on Smooth Jazz
The books have a few quick chapters on theory/background and then go into the traits of the specific style with songs 'in the style' of
in this case Yellowjackets, Jeff Lorber, Brian Culbertson, etc.
includes CD to hear/play along and such

decent starting point
and pretty inexpensive

other books with a harmony/theory focus can fill in the theory better as necessary

Get a Real or Fake Book, learn to play the standards on your instrument (chords) then how to improvise on the standards (plenty of books on improvising).

"Smooth" doesn't mean much I think. I hope it's not smooth as in "Kenny G"? There's the "cool"/ West Coast jazz of Stan Getz, Chet Baker et al. that springs to mind though.

I think any jazz tune played slow, sweet and laid back can be "smooth".

Start with Misty, How High the Moon, Autumn Leaves, My Favourite Things, Footprints, Orpheo Negro, Girl from Ipanema for instance.

Just because you don't like a particular artist doesn't make make his art any less legitimate. The OP posted his preference for smooth jazz. You are correct that this is a very broad term, and it's interpretation, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Yeah, Playing the standards, and listening to various versions by different artists from the same standards is definitely not the worst way to go.

Add that like in any musical genre, practice and work more than often will make the difference at the end of the day ......

Beeing able to get pleasure while learning is probably a good thing too. (Suffering is not mandatory ..... )

I think you're confusing the words 'smooth' and 'shit' there. :hihi:

Get some old Spiro Gyra records and Michael Franks, Chris Botti and George Benson albums and sit down and "lift" the tunes.

Most of the changes are Am9 to D9 (transpose to taste).
