FPC/FL as midi controller w/SP-404

Posting this in search of expert heeeeeeelp.

note: I'm not a noob and I have RTFM.. maybe I'm just not that clever..

I'm trying to use FL's wicked piano roll or FPC as a midi out to control the pads on my Roland SP-404.
Apparently its pretty easy to do this with padKontrol or MPC but I can't seem to get any action on the 404. uhh..
FL midi out settings seem to be correct, (I'm using a Tascam US-122 as midi out) the cables are connected, machines are powered up, the 404's just not getting the message. I do get confused between channel/patch/port (?) They both send and receive messages on 'channel' 1, is that right? bleh..

Any advice would be 'preciated
