I am little confused about the download edition of Ocean Way Drums.

The listing seems to imply that these are not multi-channel, yet it appears that I could load up each drum as an individual instrument in Kontakt, in which case I could just use Kontakt's individual outputs, no?

Is it or is it not possible to have separate outputs from Kontakt for each individual drum? I see that there is a mixer in the Kontakt Player, but I would prefer to have individual outputs so I can properly mix them in Live. Am I correct in assuming that if I have the OWD Player + a full Kontakt license, I can open up the OWD files in the full Kontakt and get individual outputs for each drum that way?

For OWD (and IP) "multi-channel" refers to the number of audio channels used forthe audio recordings of each drum.

OWD DL is stereo. I thnk that it was recorded using several channels and mixed down to a stereo sound. But you can route each Drum in OWD to a different output channel.

With OWD Silver and Gold, each drum is multi-channel so you can contorl the level of the drum recorded by each mic.

And you can open the Instruments in Kontakt 3 as long as you have OWD installed (that's how the copy protection is managed).

Okay... I almost understand, so let me now restate, just so I can get it into my (thick) head.

I WILL be able to separate individual drum tracks to their own tracks for proper mixing, correct? I mean "stereo" does not refer to a set of stereo mic's for the entire kit, right?

And multi-channel is just so you can have BFD-like controls of how much snare is in the overheads, room mic's, that kind of thing? Or am I still mistaken?

And one more: the DL version DOES include the Kontakt Player, correct? Or is that a separate purchase (that would be REALLY lame, so I hope it's not the case...)?

And the link you pointed to looks very informative--I will definitely check it out when I get a moment to read. I notice it mostly relates to Infinite Player. Does this DL version use Inifinite Player, or is it just that Infinite Player and Kontakt Player are operationally the same.

Wow, lots of questions. Sorry... Hopefully someone will be willing to field them.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Much, much appreciated!

I don't have OWD but thiis is my understanding of how it works for IP; and I believe the same approach is taken in OWD.

Yes, assigning separate drum outputs for each drum is possible (by default they may all be assigned to outputs 1/2). "Stereo" means a stereo sound for each drum (mixed down from several recording channels).

For each drum you can control the levels sent to "Room" and "OH" and the velocity sensitivity

OWD does include an OWD version of KP.

Both the OWD Player and IP are special versions of Kontakt player. You need the Player(s) installed to make use of the Drum libraries. But, once installed and authorised, you can load the libraries into Kontakt 3.

(and I hope it is all correct!)

Cool. Thanks so much for the info. Much obliged!

Thanks DarkStar.

Ocean Way Drums DL Edition IS Stereo although you can adjust the individual kit piece levels and pan. So you can turn the kick up or down, balance the levels between the drums and they are pre-assigned to individual outputs so you an process the kick separately from the snare. So in that sense it is multi-channel too.

But, in Ocean Way Drums when we say Multichannel we mean multiple MICROPHONE channels. You see, when a drum kit is recorded there are different microphones (some that are close to the drum called "Directs" and some that are above the drum called "Overheads" and then some ambient mics placed around the room called "Rooms". Then there's also the sound beneath the snares capturing the snares rattling and more. The advantages there are that you can blend the more dry sound of the directs with the more ambient/wet sounds of the overheads and rooms to all sorts of different "mixes". That's how real acoustic drum kits are recorded for records and the producer/engineers have those individual mic channels to process and mix with.

One cool thing about DL though is that it comes with 3 stereo mixes per kit (so you get three different sounding 800 megabyte kits per "kit" in reality... that means you get up to 21 different sounding kits with Ocean Way Drums DL out of the 7 kits X 3 mixes each). But you don't have access to CHANGE that mic blended mix. For that you'd need Ocean Way Drums Silver, Gold or Platinum (or individual Multichannel Kits). One cool thing about Ocean Way Drums DL Edition though is that you get 5 DL kits and can choose EITHER 2 more DL kits (stereo) or if you want you can pick out 1 Multichannel kit instead to check that out. Then if you want more Multichannel kits you can get them a la carte if you'd like. Ocean Way Drums Expandable Player (the OWD Kontakt Player) can add more kits because it is expandable and customizable.

If you go here and watch the video it explains it with audio examples: www.downloadablesoundz.com/oceanwaydrums
