hey folks..
produce a lot of music in my own time and a bit of sound work here and there. i know quite a bit on the production side of things. i want to improve/learn the theory aspect of music. chords, scales etc
unfortunatly i gave up piano lessons as a child

lol fail.

What do you lot reccomend would be a good book on music theory..

I'm in the same boat as you

I recommend 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory' 2nd Ed. by Michael Miller. I was especially interested in finding a book that would help expand my musical vocabulary, so to speak..Chord progressions etc and it's awesome. But it really covers everything.

Second the "Jazz Theory" by Mark Levine. Good book, nice examples.

If you want a typical, good college music theory book -- Kostka/Payne Tonal Harmony is what most music schools/departments use for Theory I-IV. Comes with the workbook, has tons of examples. Very solid overall. Starts with the very basics, which is nice.

Jazzology: The Encyclopedia of Jazz Theory for All Musicians by Robert Rawlins & Nor Eddine Bahha

+1 for Mark Levine's Jazz Theory book. As the name implies it has a focus on jazz but chords and scales (which you were looking for)are explained in a comprehensive and easy to understand way. I keep coming back to this book and use it almost like a dictionary. It's really good.
