Tetra... Prophet 08 rack or something else?

I'm considering either...

adding a tetra to my system which already is home to a much loved MoPho (yes Living Sounds, I know you think Dave Smith products sound like VA but I happen to like their sound. What did Dave do to you? Run over your kitten?)

or

Replacing the MoPho with a Tetra

or

adding a Prophet '08 rack.

Or something else? I mostly just want a polyphonic analog synth but I don't want to have to baby it. I want stable oscs and presets. In a perfect world it would have a VST editor, but I know that's pushing it.

Don't say Andromeda because as much as I'd love to have one, I don't have the room or the balls to spend $3K on something I use to entertain myself in my spare time. Don't get me wrong, I love good gear but I just don't think I'll be able to justify it to myself. Even the Prophet '08 rack is pushing it, but I think I might be able to swing it. Moog... I've never been overwhelmed by the Voyager and even the rack is out of my budget.

At one point I thought this job would be filled by Synth Squad, but I'm really disappointed by the demo tracks (am I the only one who thinks they sound horrible?) and by some recent reviews I'm thinking that my feelings are probably right on this. Sad. Such high hopes...

Prophet 08 rack + Mopho would be a kickass combo. Plus I think you can program most of the Mopho's parameters with the P08 panel.

I got a P08 rack, I like the sound, but it's not perfect (osc bleed thru the filter!) but what gets to me is that the knobs begin to go crazy after only 2 years!!!!! knowing that I would not buy it again -go with a tetra instead

Or wait until Dave Smith releases the Prophet 08 rack PE (potentiometer edition). I will probably get the conversion kit when it comes out.

Hm. That's sad. I know it's not the most expensive analog keyboard available but the encoders should last more than 2 years. The whole point of it would be those knobs... you're right it might just make more sense to get the Tetra.

I have a Tetra since it came out in Germany... a Mopho short before. I would prefer the Tetra over a P08 because Tetra has oscillator feedback and 2 sub oscillators per voice (Tetra has 4 voices == 4 Mophos). That gives me the sound I need! So I would never buy a P08. One thing: The envelopes of Mopho and Tetra could be a bit faster for ME, especially for bass sounds, but they are still ok. But they are not as fast as the Virus (I owned A and B) or the Yamaha TX7 which I use also for bass sounds.

I know this wasn't the point of your original question but I have to say as someone who was underwhelmed by the voyager in the store more than once am I sure glad I finally got one. Damn were my initial impressions wrong wrong wrong, which I suspected they were. Once I put it through some tweaking and reverb I couldn't stop playing it. I once created the lead synth from OMD's Almost. I teared up as I played it, it was so beautiful.

Regardless, while I'm not a fan of DSI, if I was in the market for an affordable Poly that could also store presets I would aim for the tetra not the '08 and at half the price as well.

If you use the audio input on the Mopho, you need to keep it as the Tetra is missing this feature. If you want more than 4-voice polyphony then keep the Mopho & get a tetra, or sell the Mopho & get a Pro08. Oh yeah, that crazy white pin knob for the feedback is now a recallable value like any of the filter settings etc so if you use that on the Mopho, but like me get pissed at why my track now sounds different when recalled, it might be worth getting the Tetra

If you like yellow, keep the Mopho.

Keep the Mopho, get a Tetra. At least that's what i'll be doing next year when i have the funds. I just love the sub osc's so a P08 would be out of the question (for me).

BTW, this Living Sounds person must be deaf to think Dave Smith synths sound like va

I am seriously considering getting one of these. It's one of those Creamware Prophet-5s mashed together with a Minimoog-clone.

I played with the Prophet-5 clone ages ago and I remember I liked it a lot. The Moog... well. It's a Moog. Never used this Moog-Prophet mash but in my mind I think layering a Moog with a Prophet-5 can be cool.
