Inadvertent Theft

Sometimes I have "composed" a theme or idea and realized after a while that it's someone else's shit! Then I have to purge those notes and do a re-write.
Has this ever happened to you?
Today I realized that in my morning writing I ripped myself off! I accidently recycled a theme, almost note-for-note from a short film I scored last year.
I am getting paranoid... I hope I can trust what I come up with but sometimes I get that feeling like, "where have I heard this before?????"

As long as it's accidental, it's not plagiarism but a simple coincidence. In some styles of music the "musical vocabulary" is very limited and noone is offended when two songs sound simular. There are only 12 notes after all...

Inadvertent theft of others' music? It happens quite often I guess and sometimes in somewhat unusual ways. For example:
I always disliked Simon's version anyway so it might have been good all around had Los Incas not played it (and IIRC recorded it once themselves) as a folk song that was in the public domain.Wikipedia wrote:In 1913 Alomía Robles composed "El cóndor pasa" and the song was first performed publicly at the Teatro Mazzi in Lima.
The musical group, "Los Incas" performed the song in Paris in 1960s where it was heard by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel. "Los Incas" told Simon, perhaps through ignorance, that the song was a 19th century musical composition by an anonymous composer. Simon became interested in the song and composed new lyrics for the melody. The song appeared on Simon and Garfunkel's 1970 album Bridge over Troubled Water.
In 1970 Alomía Robles' son, Armando Robles Godoy, filed a copyright lawsuit against Simon and demonstrated that the song had been composed by his father and that his father had copyrighted the song in the United States in 1933. Godoy said that he bears no ill will towards Simon for what he considers a misunderstanding.

There are only so many notes. Everything is actually stolen from nature anyway, isn't it? I guess you can try to sign it with your own weirdness or whatnot, but eventually Joe Satriani is going to sue you.
There's a Joe robot sitting behind me and he slaps me in the back of the head every time I do something remotely similar to "If I Could Fly"... like, say for example, play with distortion :SMACK:

No kidding? I did that with "Hey You". Well the chord progression anyway. Scrapped the whole thing and left it, because it was completely unintentional.bluedad wrote:f**k yeah, the best tune i ever wrote was actually 'money' by pink floydOgg Vorbis wrote: Has this ever happened to you?
