Well,

I can't say that I gave it an honest whirl. (Even bought and sold the license.)

But I need better MIDI and even with the themes, the GUI doesn't seem "smooth" enough, and no, I'm not sure what I mean by that.

But I do know that just mentioning that I "outgrew" REAPER and need advice on the "next" host is going to cause all kinds of BS to be thrown at me, so I have my fire-and-fecal full body protective suit on.

Seriously, for those who actually used REAPER for more than 5 minutes, and then went to another host that suited your needs better, where did you end up going?

I went from Reaper to Logic 8; then to Logic 9.

This is not constructive, because I left other hosts and turned, happy and relieved, to Reaper. But I have a question: what MIDI-features do you need that Reaper doesn't provide? Maybe I'm missing out on something and I don't know it.

I don't know what you mean by this, since I have no trouble with the MIDI in Reaper, but I switched from Sonar (didn't want to keep paying update fees, and the VST handling sucked when I switched) to eXT, and from there to Reaper. Might be worth checking out Sonar, I always did like its MIDI features- and I think by now the things I didn't like about the VST handling have improved. I switched from V2, so for all I know it could be significantly different by now, but MIDI was always one of its strong points.

If you don't personally miss anything then nothing is missing.

Reaper's midi is fine for many things. For me it just (currently, it's gotten better and I expect it to improve at a good pace) makes you jump through too many hoops to do some really basic stuff with midi comparatively speaking.

They'll get there but it will take some more time. In fairness Studio One is behind Reaper in midi so they'll also need some time to catch up.

Cakewalk, Cubase and Logic have been doing midi for a long time... and I suspect in some ways very advanced midi functions like Cubase's Logical Editor, Sonar's ACT or Logic's deeper midi functions may be harder to code than many audio functions.

Way back, we're talking the Dawn of Time (TM), when I first had sex, I remember thinking: "gee, I didn't know what I'd been missing!" So there are exceptions!

In all honesty, my question was sprinkled with a little irony, although I really was (and still am) curious. You hear this a lot about Reaper: "oh, the MIDI...", and I've yet to find any REAL shortcomings in this area. But then, I can play my instruments and rarely even use the piano roll. Hence my ignorance.

But I don't mean to hijack the thread.

External instruments and MIDI parts are a pain in the ass to work with. I've really been wanting to fully integrate my hardware with my software but it never seems to work out well. I can use one instrument at a time, but after that *shrug* and Reaper was even more unintuitive and annoying to work with than my current DAW.

The two things I really would like for MIDI in Reaper:
Groove Quantise
Right clicking on a midi track would have the option of inserting a midi event.

Can you not do the 2nd one by customisaing the context menu?
