Danger Beach Remix Bass

How to make that sound...

Happy New Year guys!

I was wondering if you could help me out. This remix by Danger has an awesome, really funky bass sound (in at 15 sec.)

I have two questions-

1. How do I play a bass like that- is he pitch bending it up and down? If so, how many semitones of bending is this? Can this be done with a normal MIDI piano? How would you go about playing like this???

2. Lastly, how would you make this bass sound?

Thanks guys, I hope you are up for answering me, that would be great!

Stay golden! 8)

Nice attitude. Sometimes you just don't get a response, duder. That's the intarwebbles for ya.

That's gotta be one of the sickest basslines I heard lately. Damn.
I spent like an hour and a half trying to get it, but I couldn't.

I started approaching it, somewhat, and I learned a few things - I think it's either FM, or dominated by square waves. I thought PWM might be involved, but I had no luck with that. The hollowness might be accomplished by either some form of chorus, or via tiny delays. My last attempt, for instance, used a stereo delay with times between 1.0 - 3.0 ms(no feedback). Might not be whats happening here, but it does accomplish a pretty rad effect that you might like.

I'm also thinking that the keyboard tracking controlled the amount of filter envelope, as it seems like the higher notes let the high frequencies linger for longer, disproportionate to the higher frequencies intrinsic to a higher note. Pretty cool for adding a bit of automatic expressiveness.

I don't see why the line would be played 'live' and not with an automated pitch bend. So unless there's some evidence to the contrary, assume it's midi automation.

Demargeo, if you're sure you can accomplish this sound simply or find it in a preset, please do give us a rundown on how it's made.

Thanks for the reply, bro.
Good advice throughout.
I cant get this sound either, I have been fiddling for a while, i cant get my head around this tracking control thing...sound useful though.

I dont know how common it is as an assignable parameter in other synths, but in mine it represents controlling a value according to how high or how low on the keyboard you're playing.

For instance, if you assigned pitch to key tracking, then you would get higher pitches the higher the note you played. If you assigned key tracking to filter cutoff, then the filter cutoff would raise or lower depending on how high or low you played the keyboard.

In this case, I tried out assigning key tracking to increase the filter envelope ammount, or how large the filter sweep is. Thus, a low note wouldn't have much high frequency stab on it, but a high note would pierce a bit more.

God would I love to see this tutorial too!

I was actually playing a lot with automation of my cutoff and resonance and if it's fairly subtle i can get the same kind of effect. I was working with 2 detuned saw though, which may not be perfect.

I am not sure what the filter envelope would be, i would say for now a very fast attack, short to medium decay, low sustain and no release.

i would tend to say there are 2 or more layered version of the same bass, which are probably processed differently. Delay and some subtle vintage warmer to give this kind of clean grit?

just ideas i may be totally wrong :P

Anyone else wanna take a stab at this?
