some of these pieces might be familiar to long-time jopy listeners, as i've posted a few here for comments in the past. most of them, however, have never been uploaded or shared before. you can listen to the streaming tracks in the grey flash player, or go straight to downloading the mp3 files by cliking on the download link.

for those unfamiliar with jopy, the music is a mix of ambient/soundscape experimentalism, glitches, shoegaze/alternative rock, free jazz, along with snatches of some african and afro-brazilian inspired percussion.

feedback is very much welcome on the overall mix/mastering details, i can certainly use some advice in that regard.

thanks for your time...

p.s. just realized that i need to post direct mp3 links to get on the player, which i will be doing now. these also might be helpful for those seeking to download specific tracks. i'll just do the new "trial" tracks so i'm not overflowing the player or putting up stuff that i've already shared here on KVR:

nice. :-)

jopy is evolving. :-) :-)

to me it sounds like you are getting into a live-feeling jazz-fusion-meets-electronica kind of thing. (which reminded me here 'n there of bitches brew.) my favorite pieces of the set were in this vein:

Cycad
or not
Orangutan swings
taken

i also quite liked the trials, especially 2 and 3 which have a cool melodic-monologue feel about them, long extended melodies. sounds like you are getting into new (for you) timbral realms here, yes?

i was less taken with the cloud-of-ambient pieces. they didn't engage my "wow, i've never quite heard this before" sense.

regarding Sizzle, the material is quite nice, but the extreme panning in the first part doesn't work so well for me, especially with headphones.

so what do YOU think of this album of yours? did you do what you wanted to get done? :-)

Thanks for the thoughts guys, and also for preventing me from slipping off the first page.

Regarding Rachmiel's comments, I do think there's something shifting here, away from the more ambient, processed, somewhat psychologically distant material that was interesting for me when i started doing jopy, toward something with more visceral appeal. That's why the live instruments are coming more to the fore. The pieces Rachmiel liked the best were all performed almost entirely in real time--even the more "electronic" sounding material was done without much programming or editing.

So, in sum, i guess i am reasonably happy with how it turned out and with the fact that it sounds new and different. I don't want to get too complacent with music. I'm enjoying listening to this which is pretty much the main goal i have when i'm making music.

I'm listening to the second track now. Did you play guitar and bass on this? I really like the psychedelic vibe of this contrasted with the more ambient but still pretty trippy first track. I did also really enjoy the bloopy synth sequence from the first one, sound like the stuff I like to do with my modular and Numerology.

Third track has started. Very nice tension. Reminds me of a song Aspects of Physics performed when I saw them at SDSU.

Finally got to hear this in an uninterrupted stretch...

My faves:

trial1 - I found this to be a hypnotic feast of sounds, a few moments put me in mind of P Glass.

or not - I thought this was the most successful blend of jazzy and electronic elements, the bass was awesome and I found unexpected grooves popping up all over the place.

Other notables:

taken - Nice rhythm machine style groove and beautiful piano, really enjoyed the guitar.

cycad - I like this angular piece, bass in particular stood out.

sizzles - Lots of interesting stereo play, I like the layering that adds complexity and gives it a hyper feel, put me in mind of Pink Floyd in some ways.

Thanks for sharing this jopy! :)

Thanks much justin and polyslax, I really appreciate the comments and thoughts. This is the sort of push in a forward direction that I've been needing lately.

Just one bump...

Post

Trials 1 and 2 (especially 1) have too much of a high frequency I've developed a hypersensitivity to (didn't even make it through Trial 1), but Trials 3 and 4 I like very much, 4 probably a bit more though I couldn't say why. I've got the download page marked for when I get access to a better connection so I can get the whole thing. If after hearing it all I think of something in particular to add I'll come back and add it; if not, let this thanks suffice: Thanks.

I have yet to figure out how to get any music done or even practiced with my new schedule, but I will eventually
