Portable MUSIC iphone? HTC? ableton?

so i have been doing some research for a a good portable solution for me. I would like to be able to process sound on a portable device and the back out into small speakers.

they make a varity of ION battery powered speakers (easy fix)

battery powered mic preamp (easy)

what about processing?
I have seen some of the iphone aps and i was not impressed. IKmultimedia released this thing called "IRIG". so no that shows you can actually plug a guitar or mic directly into your phone with no latency. but you still have to use what effects that come with the Hardware device.

I need an open source mobile device where i can use low CPU cost vsts. I have been looking at the HTC, but i can not tell if i can load a host onto it. I am pretty sure you could use a midi controller like the nanokontrol. but im not positive: http://driver-pro.com/related/english/h ... 2226&hit=1

I would like to walk around with just a small backpack and manipulate my vocals and synths on the fly with a midi controller. I need some absolute certainties or even some ideas. is there any awesome portable audio effects devices that i am overlooking?

You want to do no-latency guitar processing on a portable device with no inputs other than a mic? This just sounds physically impossible to me...maybe I'm not understanding this. If you're just looking for something small to have as a host, look into UMPC's by Sony and Fujitsu. They both have made some pretty decent hardware that is slightly larger than a Nintendo DS and it's a full fledged PC in a tiny box, so you can load hosts right on it. I personally use the Fujitsu U820 and after a bit of alterations after I opened the box (it comes with Vista...BLECH), it runs very well. Just keep in mind with a small device you're working with a smaller screen so it's definitely not an option for someone with bad eyesight or neck problems...

For the moment you can just forget running VSTs and VST hosts (like Ableton Live) on a mobile phone. That just ain't happening. You need something that is written especially for the device.

And you can certainly not connect a NanoPad to a HTC device. They don't have midi interfaces so that's out.

There is a midi interface for the Iphone but it's future is shaky as Apple tries their best to assfuck developers as much as possible (without lube).

There have been several attempts to make pocket sized music devices but if you ask me they're just toys and nothing else. If you want to do something remotely serious and painless use a real device.

There's some really interesting Android pads coming out later this year. Maybe things will change for the better. Right about now it doesn't look too good.

yeah that fujitsu UH series looked like up my alley. A mini computer is what i would need. They still are a bit clunky.

So i guess i know now what i am looking for. I need an Ultra portable PC for under 600. The smaller the better.

Sony vaio made a U series but i can not find them anywhere since they came out in 2005 and were way over priced. maybe it was not a good product.

another idea i had would be to battery power an ultra compact desktop. like the Acer Aspire Revo. how would i build a power supply that i could put in my backpack?

or just take a net-book and figure a way to use ableton when the device is closed shut. find someway of cooling it inside a pack. The problem is once you close the net-book, it shuts off. I found this, but i am not sure if thats what i would need. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN

It is portable but not battery powered. It does accept plugins for audio input processing. It does support midi input and supports all the same formats that receptor supports. It's also more rugged then a laptop.
Where are you expecting to use such a thing that you can't access an outlet?
If you plan to take your laptop outdoors you are going to get a rude awakining trying to see anything in direct sunlight.
