Incredible New Piano Sample Library for KONTAKT

Reposting this from another forum, so KVRers can hear about this incredible news from Cinesamples. Here's the original announcement:
-------
Well we were presented a unique opportunity to capture a piece of history before it disappears from public use, it was an opportunity too important to let pass by - for so many reasons.
Sadly the second to last big room in Manhattan (and therefore most of the east coast) has been sold. Clinton Recording - destined to become a new condo building, as has been the destiny of so many of the classic new york studios.
Clinton was very special because it had what I think must be the most famous piano in NY. Used on the classic Miles Davis albums including Kind of Blue, used on the most famous classical piano album Gould's Goldberg Variations. It used to live at Columbia Record's 30th Street Studio before being purchased by Clinton.
Along with the piano, clinton purchased 4 M-49 microphones from them also. Why is that important? Well Kind of Blue was recorded on 7 M49 from columbia studios. Although the history of the mics is lost it is safe to assume these mics were on that date - well perhaps they were recording miles or trane though.
We got a nice sampling of it - it is 3rd on the list behind voxos and cymbals (which means aside from being recorded its not being worked on at all till they are done).
But here is a clip for you to compare to kind of blue - its just barry noodling a bit - its in mono (the product will have 3 stereo pairs). But this is the mic position used on Kind of Blue - which the piano is in mono - also recorded to tape for that extra vibe. Hope you enjoy, the end result will certainly sound like this.
This was the last bunch of sessions ever to be done at this historic studio, we closed the door so to speak. It is likely this is the last time these mics will ever be on this piano.

This is the actually piano, not the samples, correct? It sounds very very nice.

Yeah, it's the actual piano, but I wouldn't be surprised if the final product ends up sounding just like this considering the amount of velocity layers. We're also using the latest Kontakt technology with scripting to produce realistic string resonance and pedaling.mojamusic wrote:This is the actually piano, not the samples, correct? This is one beautiful piano! I really love those old jazzy piano sounds. Nina Simone also has great sounding pianos in some of her 60s records. Good mono options are also essential as most modern libraries that I've used can sound "phased" when collapsed to mono.
My only worry is tape hiss. You know it adds character to real recording of played piano, but with loads of multisamples it will be multiplied. I really hope this works out well without some noise reduction.

Greg thanks for posting this!
We are truly excited (/honored) to be presenting this library quite soon.
Our first intention was to capture the piano historically in mono and to be honest I would have been quite happy walking away with only that. However our engineer Tim Starnes suggested - hey why not throw some more mics on the piano, and sure we did that. So in the end there are three stereo pairs, even though we will definitely be maintaining the historical perspective of the mono mix presented in this small demonstration I played.
We carefully thought about the problem of making a library to tape and so we took a few enhancements to ensure minimal noise while getting the tape sound.
1) We bypassed the original pre amps and went through a cleaner channel
2) We decided not to record on 1/2 inch tape but rather a very well maintained 2' tape machine
3) We decided to record at 30 IPS rather then the 15" that Kind of Blue was recorded
4) We spent a very long time getting our levels clean -down to half a decibel - ensuring that the mics were as hot as we could have them without distortion
5) We recorded the entire thing directly into Pro tools and also to tape, so we have both
6) We recorded at 96K
7) We used very nice, modern, tape (one reel = $300!) instead of historical tape - the modern tape is more sturdy and certainly more quiet.
Anyway guys If you have any other questions let us know. It is really such a cool project, we will keep the price friendly so everyone can partake.

This is really exciting. It sounds beautiful and I love the piano's history (I'm a huge Miles Davis/John Coltrane fan, and own a number of CDs that have that very piano on them). It also makes me wish I was a better pianist. Still, even with my poor piano playing skills, I'm lusting after this upcoming sampled piano library!
@Cinesamples Do you have a good idea when you expect to release this library?

Right now we're just finishing off the VOXOS choir library. The piano library is next.
It's going to feature a killer sympathetic resonance engine, too. As a pianist myself, I'm really picky when it comes to piano libraries, so you can bet the library will sound and feel as realistic as possible!
