This was probably first discussed in 2004, but did it ever happen? Is there a Tom Scholz Rockman emulation available as a VST anywhere on planet earth? Did it sound convincing?

Not to my experience, but...
I'd check out Mokafix Audio's Stompbox Creations:

Maybe it's among the bunch, or something that is satisfying just as much.

Mokafix stuff is good, but I don't think there is a good Rockman emulation there

Closest I've come to the sound is with Amplitube 3. I use the JC 120 amp, crank its distortion all the way. Turn on the amp's slow chorus, then load the Ambass'dor stomp but don't touch any of its settings. Lastly I put the tube compressor rack in the rack section and adjust to taste.
It gets me closest to the 'Third Stage' rockman sound.

Thanks for the tip. That just might work for the track I need it on.

Yes I know it's 10 years later, but if anyone still cares, stay tuned. I just looked for this a month ago like crazy and now I was randomly browsing and found this: https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/s ... e-satriani (https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/satriani/?pkey=amplitube-joe-satriani)- Rad Grandad

ftr if that ass scholz gets one penny it's a great reason to not buy it.

I'll check it out. I've since bought a Helix, created an IR based on the opening riff to Don't Look Back and then added some chorus and delay to it and it covers most of my needs for that tone. But I'm definitely curious about the Satriani collection if it has Rockman Emulation.
