"Orchestral" and "free" together might get difficult.

I'd check out some nice soundfonts.

DSK has some nice orchestral stuff, and ProteusVX has quite a few orchestral samples in it's sample-set.
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

too bad that EW has stopped their starter edition...

...that was a fantastic opportunity !

Not 'orchestral' per se, but UGO's String Theory, like all his other plugs, is a work of art. Sounds great, tons of uses.

If you're looking for strings, maybe the Kore's Soundpack 'sessions strings' of Native Instruments might be working for you? Sounds really sweet.

I must say there is no much orchestral content in them at least indepence free version what i have nothing do this area, and same for kontakt player. there is somewhere free orchestral samples...
ps. dsk samplesounds are getted many net sources maybe non legal also. i dont say dsk uses illegal samples but who make them cannot know if these sources distributes illegal material. but orginal idea is almost impossible. i use mainly miroslav philharmonik. and there is light (non free) version it:
IK MULTIMEDIA MIROSLAV PHILHARMONIK CLASSIK
ps. but very cheap and maybe best cheap solution.

best free combination that could do what you want is:
- sfz (free sf2 player)
+ squid orchestral sf2
http://www.sf2midi.com/soundfonts/file- ... -3893.html

or other orchestral soundfont. ( there are other 2-3 good ones )
also check:
http://hammersound.com/cgi-bin/soundlink.pl
